Specific Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoc researcher to join our interdisciplinary team working on the development of a trustworthy medical code recommender system. This NSF-supported project addresses key challenges in medical coding and reimbursement, including errors in manual coding, limitations of current systems, and the need for increased transparency and trustworthiness in emerging healthcare technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to improving the accuracy and efficiency of medical coding, working closely with healthcare professionals and researchers.

Essential Functions:

• Apply advanced methodologies, including AI and machine learning, to address challenges in medical coding, reduce errors, and optimize billing processes.
• Integrate pharmacological data and clinical guidelines to improve coding accuracy for medications and therapies, ensuring appropriate billing for pharmaceutical interventions.
• Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including pharmacists (PharmD), physicians (MD), and clinical staff, to ensure the system aligns with real-world clinical workflows and supports accurate reimbursement.
• Work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, informatics specialists, and researchers to validate and refine the system’s effectiveness and trustworthiness.

Competencies:

• Strong understanding of healthcare standards and medical coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HL7, SNOMED) and healthcare revenue cycle
• Expertise in clinical data extraction and analysis from EMRs.
• Advanced AI and machine learning methodologies applicable to healthcare.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment, with a significant portion of work focused on research and collaboration with healthcare professionals and technical teams.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time, temporary 1-year position, with the possibility of extension based on performance. Hours may vary. Occasional long hours may be required based on project demands.

Travel:

Minimal travel expected, primarily local for campus meetings and collaboration with healthcare institutions.

Required Education and Experience:

PhD in CS/Data Science, PharmD, MD with relevant experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Experience working in a pharmaceutical, clinical or healthcare-related setting.
• Previous experience collaborating in multidisciplinary research teams and have strong publication record.
