Job Description:
Idaho Power (IPC) is looking for four _Pre-Apprentice Lineworkers_ to join our hard-working line crews! The Idaho Power Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship programs prepare the future of our workforce to provide safe, reliable, and clean energy for the communities we serve.
What does a Pre-Apprentice Lineworker do for us?
As an important member of a line crew, Pre-Apprentice Lineworkers perform construction and maintenance work on overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines. In exchange, they earn competitive pay and benefits, on-the-job training, and the opportunity to provide our communities with a critical service. Pre-Apprentices must demonstrate the ability to be promoted to an Apprentice Lineworker through on-the-job evaluations, behavioral interviews, and performance evaluations. Pre-Apprentices will be required to rotate to multiple locations throughout IPC’s service territories and work on different line crews.
NOTE: Pre-Apprentices will be eligible to bid Full-Time, Regular Apprentice Lineworker positions as they become available on the crews. If unsuccessful in obtaining an Apprentice position within 12 months of hire, they will be released from employment.
Primary Job Duties:
+ Assist in building distribution overhead and underground and/or transmission facilities
+ Assist in stocking line trucks with commonly used tools, parts, and equipment
+ Fuel and clean line trucks and other equipment
+ Maintain inventory levels and transfer and receive materials
+ Assist in maintaining tools and equipment
+ Frame poles by attaching arms, braces, and insulators per Idaho Power Guidelines
+ Dig holes and assist in setting poles and anchors
+ Drive and operate line vehicles and station them properly for the work to be done
+ Climb poles once deemed capable by qualified personnel

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
+ Construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment
+ Chemical safety
+ Commonly encountered materials, parts, and equipment used in line construction
+ IPC's service territories
+ Safe work practices
+ Basic mechanical and electrical tasks
Skills in:
+ Basic use of personal computers
+ Interpersonal communication
+ Use of hand tools and power tools
+ Heavy equipment operation
Ability to:
+ Perform basic arithmetic calculations
+ Maintain effective working relationships with other members of a crew
+ Maintain neat, accurate, and legible records
+ Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours
+ Work overtime at the discretion of the supervisor
+ Stand call as required by management
+ Ability to learn and retain training provided
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants MUST be at least 18 years of age and meet the following requirements.
Education:
+ High school diploma or GED
+ Candidates must have graduated from a recognized Line School
+ Internal candidates must have previously graduated from a recognized Line School OR have 2 years of relevant field operations experience while employed by Idaho Power OR have 3 months of Utility Laborer work experience at Idaho Power with successful completion of the Utility Laborer self-study coursework
Experience:
+ 1 year of experience performing physical or construction labor
OR
+ 1 year of experience working for a utility
Preferred:
+ Demonstrated experience in lines-related work
+ A combination of relevant experience to include:
+ Heavy equipment operation
+ Commercial vehicle operation
+ Electrical wiring (AC or DC)
+ Construction labor
+ General labor
+ Use of hand tools and power tools
+ Demonstrated experience working extended hours in all weather conditions
Licenses & Certifications:
+ Valid Class A CDL with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
+ Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
+ Be capable of acquiring tanker, doubles, and hazardous materials endorsements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves maintenance and repair of transformers at ground level and vault. This can require up to 150 lbs. push/pull activities, lifts up to 50 lbs., frequent kneeling, standing and crouching, as well as climbing into the vault. This job also involves climbing (up to) 50 ft. utility poles to install/repair, while carrying 40 lbs. safety gear. Mechanical and hand tools are used to dig holes up to 14 feet in which poles are placed via team lift. Cross arms, which require a team lift of 120 lbs., and other equipment will be installed/replaced on poles using a mag drill. Other activities required are loading and unloading ATV’s using a ramp, attaching wire, hotstick/shotgun use, hiking/carrying tools up to several miles per day, occasional digging and frequent above shoulder work including the use of a manual trimmer. Data entry is also required for up to 3 consecutive days to input all field work into record keeping software. To ensure the manufacturer's rated capacity of climbing hooks, ladders, and aerial equipment are not exceeded, applicants body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the DOT medical certificate. The primary intent of the Pre-Apprentice program is to allow each Pre-Apprentice as much exposure to line work as possible while the Company assesses the Pre-Apprentice’s behavioral and technical competencies. To facilitate this objective, frequent rotations are necessary. The below rotation guidelines will be in place for all Pre-Apprentices. These guidelines are subject to change based upon business need:
+ Pre-Apprentices will be placed in one of three regions (Capital/Canyon West, Southern or Eastern Regions) which will be their primary reporting location and rotate throughout the regions across the Idaho Power territories as assigned.
+ Employees will rotate to a different crew every eight weeks. Employees may rotate to another crew at the same location, but every effort will be made to allow the employee to rotate to as many Company locations as possible.
+ An evaluation will be completed at the end of each assignment by the supervising Foreman.
_Internal, regular employees who are successful candidates will be placed as regular employees in a Temporary Duty Assignment job classification. Qualified employees must have been in their current position for at least six months and have supervisory approval to participate in order for their current position to be held for their return._
