Job Description
The Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse (RN) performs nursing care for patients across the preoperative and postoperative period from admission to discharge. Care involves assessing, communicating patient status, performing nursing procedures, completing preoperative check list, coordinating with anesthesia personnel, completing preoperative orders and documenting care given. The Registered Nurse must transmit the ability to assure that the patient needs are met through the continuum of care, while concurrently providing support to facility staff and the operating physician.
Job Responsibilities:
- Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel.
- Reviews schedule on an ongoing manner.
- Participates in staff development, quality assurance and staff meetings.
- Assists in the training of new hires and annual training for employees.
- Participates in facility fire and emergency drills.
- Verification of the patient’s pre-operative vital signs and general conditions.
- Verification of the operative procedure, site, surgeon, and anesthesiologist.
- Follows the standards of care for pre-op and post-op nursing care, along with preferences of surgeons and anesthesiologists.
- Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
- Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
- Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
- Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum.
- Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation.
- Maintains current knowledge of accreditation standards specific to the facility as well as state and federal regulations; demonstrates understanding of legal implications of nursing actions.
- Ensures the facility is ready for an accreditation or state inspection at any time.
- Uses equipment accurately and participates in training and in-services before using. Uses equipment safely while protecting equipment from damage.
- Performs techniques and procedures according to accepted standards of practice.
- Assists in managing inventory of supplies, drugs, Pre-Op, and PACU area.
- Performs patient care using accepted professional standards.
- Performs other duties as requested by management.
- Participate in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Committee (QAPI).
- Travels to facilities on need be basis.
- Maintain all checks and log forms up to date according to facility policy.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers, managers, patients, visitors, vendors, families and physicians
- Ability to promote a positive facility image with physicians, patients, visitors, vendors and the general public
- Ability to make decisions and solve problem
- Ability to follow direction and corporate policy and procedures
- Reliable and punctual
Preferred Experience:
- Previous ASC experience
Depending on setting, may also:
- Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
- Upholds HIPAA regulations
Requirements:
- PALS certified, as appropriate to the facility
- ACLS and BLS certification
Educational Requirements:
- RN with active license in California
- Critical care or PACU experience
