Summary:
The President & CMO of Newport Hospital (NH) will serve as the senior executive for the Hospital with responsibility for the quality and safety of patient care employee and physician engagement patient experience process improvement and operating and financial results. He/She will interact collaboratively within Brown University Health as a member of the executive team and represent NH within the framework of the Brown University Health system.
This position functions as both the NH President and Chief Medical Officer providing senior executive direction and leadership towards Brown University Health's mission and strategic objectives while also being responsible for the hospital�s delivery of exceptional patient care professional relations among providers and other clinicians and supporting the creation and implementation of med staff rules regulations and procedures. In this dual role the President & CMO reports directly to the Chief of Hospital Operations working in close collaboration and under their direction.
This executive will lead the strategy of NH and Brown University Health in coordination with system level colleagues and with a view toward the broader population in the region that is served by Brown University Health. They will also ensure that the highest level of quality care and service are delivered to patients at NH consistent with the organization�s strategic mission and regulatory standards. The President & CMO is also responsible for ensuring the quality of medical staff functions maintaining close and effective relationship with chiefs of service and other hospital and system executives and participating in medical staff and administrative committees as appropriate. This executive works in close collaboration with nursing leadership to model physician/nursing dyadic management of clinical and administrative issues planning and program development.
In the Chief Medical Officer role the executive is responsible for the hospital�s overall delivery of patient care professional relations among providers and other clinicians and supporting the creation and implementation of medical staff rules regulations and procedures. Provides administrative leadership to ensure highest level of quality care and service to patients consistent with the Hospital�s strategic mission and regulatory standards. Ensures quality of medical staff association functions within NH. Maintains close and effective working relationship with chiefs of service and other hospital and system executives. Participates in medical staff and administrative committees as appropriate. Works in close collaboration with nurse leadership to model the physician/nurse dyad in addressing of clinical and administrative issues plans and program development.

Physician Leadership
- Collaborates with clinical department chiefs and executive management to lead and promote interdisciplinary development and the coordination planning and implementation of enhancements to the inpatient and outpatient clinical programs at the Hospital. Participates in the development of administrative patient care policies. Collaborates with nursing management in the establishment of nursing policies and procedures.
- Supports and fosters effective and efficient clinical management through evaluation of physician practice patterns establishment of practice pathways and outcome measurements.
- Functions as physician strategic coordinator for service-quality improvement by promoting and coordinating with clinical department chiefs. Work with clinical department chiefs to establish medical staff objectives and processes for continuous quality improvement at NH and across the system.
- Assists directors of all clinical departments and committees in setting and attaining objectives for continuous improvement of quality of medical care.
- Participates in development and coordinates implementation of hospital�s quality assurance program with the objective of meeting/exceeding hospital�s internal quality service standards as well as relevant standards of The Joint Commission and other accrediting or licensing bodies.
- Provides medical direction and consultation to system�s risk management program.
- Represent hospital with third-party reimbursement agencies and government agencies pertaining to medical peer review.
- Supports the collaborative development of clinical research and training programs with community hospitals and agencies. Functions as a liaison with community agencies and professional outreach programs as the clinical representative of the hospital.
- Develops or advises in the development of recruiting plans for physicians and advanced practice providers. Assures appropriate ongoing training and professional development of the providers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned required or directed by the EVP Chief of Hospital Operations.
Other information:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduate of medical school approved by Council of Medical Education of American Medical Association with license to practice as a physician in the State of Rhode Island.
Board certification in specialty and/or subspecialty.
Ten or more years related experience with at least seven years� experience in clinical practice of medicine preferably gained in a large and complex healthcare organization. Experience must demonstrate success in developing and maintaining effective relationships with medical staff other healthcare providers and executive leadership. Experience must demonstrate administrative and medical staff organizational experience within an academic medical center.
Progressive leadership experience and demonstrated success in improving and maintaining operational excellence within a complex multi-site integrated academic healthcare delivery system.
Proven track record of creating revenue levers that drive financial growth.
Strong understanding and successful track record of optimizing clinical care delivery in acute care settings. Demonstrated track record of improving quality outcomes while increasing operating efficiency.
Significant experience leading recruiting evaluating and developing direct and indirect reports including management professional and administrative staff.
Strong community presence and a proven track record of engaging the donor community.
Team-based leader with experience achieving effective collaboration across organizational lines and fostering a culture of engagement at all levels of the organization.
Clear and transparent communicator.
