Project Sophia is a new generation business application, built ground up from market-disruptive, AI-first product principles. Powered by large language models and deep business domain expertise, Project Sophia will empower the user to build out research journeys, automatically suggesting relevant data sources and correlating insights, intelligently visualizing exploration outcomes and suggesting next actions in the research journey. Project Sophia represents the new way of doing business, enabling strategic business decision making in a fraction of the time – filling a gap in the market where no app exists today.
We are in the very early stages of the product lifecycle and are innovating and iterating at a very rapid pace. To further accelerate the momentum in this space – bringing AI powered experiences to the business application space changing how people work - we continue to grow our investments of generative AI capabilities.
The Team
We are a small, but very dynamic and passionate team that fully embrace the build-measure-learn iterative development approach. We work towards the common goal of building a product customers love. As a natural part of our product design and development process we are working very closely with customers as well as listening to usage telemetry and other key signals which allow us to consistently evolve based on customer demand and adoption patterns. Deep collaboration across PM, Design, Engineering, and Science is a given and all disciplines play important roles as part of the product development process.

The Candidate
We are looking for a Principal Applied Science Manger who can bring deep applied science experience and a proven track record of shipping at-scale AI-enabled intelligent systems to drive vision and innovation for Project Sophia. As a Principal Applied Science Manager, you will be leading an exciting and fast-paced environment, collaborating closely with teams across the company, including Microsoft Research and various product groups. You will work as part of an organization that brings together talent in the areas of large language models, deep learning, information retrieval, software engineering, and responsible AI. Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Masters Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) people management experience
- 1+ years experience with leading Machine Learning projects and managing team of data scientists.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years experience writing production code as well as deploying and maintaining shipped models over time.
- 2+ years experience working on deep learning architectures specifically with Natural language-based models, vector databases and graph databases
Applied Sciences M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities
- Lead, build, grow and support an innovative applied science team
- Technical leadership in an applied science team in the area of Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
- Push the boundaries of AI platforms through innovation and partnership.
- Develop and deploy conversational and language understanding models at scale.
- Following and advancing best practices for Responsible AI and Privacy Preserving Machine Learning.
- Support hiring, coaching, mentoring and career development of Applied Scientists to build an inclusive and ambitious applied science team.
- Collaborate closely with Microsoft Research and product teams to create the next generation of AI innovation in our products and services. · Embody our culture and values
