The Microsoft Word Writing Assistance and Language Intelligence team builds large scale natural language understanding and natural language generation models using cutting edge Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies and advanced linguistic knowledge. The team has a 25-year track record of delivering innovative AI-powered writing assistance solutions to millions of users worldwide with a vision of bringing out the best writer in everyone. The team have recently launched a set of groundbreaking Copilot features that help users to dramatically enhance productivity and creativity throughout their writing journey from start to finish.
As a **Principal Applied Scientist** in the team, you will champion innovative principles and forward-looking technologies related to changes in industry/market trends, advances, and opportunities in applied technologies. You will lead and drive intelligence experience projects through their entire life cycle from idea creation through rigorous science experiments, evaluations, and finally to worldwide availability in collaboration with other applied scientists, researchers, engineers, and product managers. You will also conduct cutting-edge applied research leading to high product impact and publish your work in top-tier conferences and journals. **Responsibilities**
The mission of the team is to advance intelligent reading and writing assistance in M365 and to make fundamental contributions to advancing the state-of-the-art in language technology within Microsoft and in the industry.?
+ You will act as a leading expert in your field for a broad area of research, applying this knowledge to solve product-related problems. You'll also champion innovative technologies related to industry trends, products, and other advances, and develop and share unique technical knowledge with teams.
+ You will incorporate key business and product requirements to define a clear agenda and drive programs around key business challenges. You'll advise teams on methods, ensure quality and scientific rigor, and drive business impact.
+ You will proactively provide mentorship and build your team's capabilities. You'llestablish best practices, serve as technical lead, build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders and drive efforts to attract, screen and interview top talent.
+ You will drive discussions around ethics and privacy policies related to research and lead decision making efforts. You'll ensure that members across the discipline are aware of the potential for bias in the solutions being developed.

**Qualifications**
**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ 6+ years of research or product experience in NLP and hands-on experience in Deep Learning using PyTorch, Tensorflow or similar.
+ 5+ years of software engineering experience in Python or C# or similar.
**Other Requirements**
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
+ **Microsoft Cloud Background Check** : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ PhD degree in Computational Linguistics or Computer Science with a focus on NLP.
+ 3+ years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.
+ 7+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).
+ 5+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
+ 7+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.
+ Experience conducting applied research and publishing papers.
Applied Sciences IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
