Hennepin County Public Works is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician to join the Design division within the Transportation Project Delivery department. This position will work as part of a team to deliver roadway reconstruction projects with opportunities for professional and technical growth through training and working with other experienced roadway design professionals.
Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340 and remote, as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours are flexible between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

This is a full-time, benefit-earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Transportation Project Delivery department to apply to this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.
This position is internally classified as a Principal Engineering Technician.

In this position, you will:
- Draft high quality and legally defensible legal descriptions based on Microstation/Design engineer limits.
- Direct, train, and check the work of other technicians; ensuring deadlines are met.
- Research and create situation maps to landowner or other governmental units inquire into land ownership related to public roads.
- Perform tasks in the design and review of traffic design elements for complex road and bridge projects that may include, but are not limited to traffic signals, temporary and permanent signing & striping, street lighting, construction staging and traffic control plans.
- Assist in project coordination efforts to include utilities, agencies, residents and other county departments.
- Support other technicians and design teams by applying roadway design criteria that include complex preliminary geometric layouts, determining typical construction sections, surface modeling, profile grades, drainage, detail design standards, specification items, preparing, checking and/or reviewing cost estimates.
- Assist during development of federal and/or state required documents.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Eight years or more experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
- Current Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level 4.
- Licensed Land Surveyor (LS), Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) Certification or Licensed Surveyor in Training (LSIT) may be substituted for 5 years of experience.
- Note: One of the following may be substituted for one year of the required experience:
- Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology, building automation systems/heating ventilation air conditioning or land surveying training program.
- 30 college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science or engineering-related technical courses.
- Specialized training in writing complex legal descriptions.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have:
- Experience:
- Designing and reviewing preliminary and detailed public works roadway reconstruction plans.
- Directing a work team and/or coordinating work with other internal department divisions.
- Utilizing complex computer software, such as CAD (OpenRoads, InRoads, Geopak, Civil 3D or equivalent), GIS, spreadsheets, or databases.
- Reading and interpreting engineering design manuals, technical memorandums, construction plans, specifications, and other job-related forms.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of traffic engineering, civil engineering, engineering construction materials, equipment, and practices.
- Ability to:
- Maintain effective relationships with contractors, residents, and coworkers.
- Schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.
- Work independently and in teams with minimal direction.
