Cardinal Hayes High School is announcing the start of the search for its next Principal. This principal job will formally start on July 1, 2025. Cardinal Hayes is seeking a dynamic, engaged individual with a passion for Catholic education and Catholic inner-city education. Cardinal Hayes High School is undergoing very exciting transformative changes in numerous areas of the school including academics, co-curricular activities, development, admissions, and the physical plant. Hayes has made numerous upgrades to the physical plant over the past three years and has introduced some cutting-edge coursework in areas such as financial empowerment and modern mechanical drawing. Cardinal Hayes High School is seeking an academic leader to continue this transformation in creative and dynamic ways that engage the entire faculty and student body. Having survived the pandemic, the next principal will be expected to continue to innovate and offer creative solutions to some of the unique challenges of the Cardinal Hayes community.
Reporting to the President of Cardinal Hayes High School, the next Principal of Cardinal Hayes High School needs to provide a strong presence throughout the school. The principal is expected to engage faculty and students daily in positive, creative ways that keep Catholic learning at the forefront for all interactions. The principal is responsible for managing and reviewing a faculty of roughly 45 individuals. The principal position is a twelve- month, senior administrative job requiring daily attendance at the school and attendance and participation at many weekend and evening events. The next principal of Cardinal Hayes High School must display a passion and commitment to the school witnessed through energetic and passionate engagement with all stakeholders of the school including the Archdiocese of New York, parents, faculty, students, alumni, Board of Trustees, local officials, state officials, donors, local businesses and others.
Cardinal Hayes High School is an all-boys Roman Catholic High School located on the Grand Concourse in the South Bronx. Located in the poorest Congressional district in America, Hayes provides a Catholic education for students from the surrounding area and the five boroughs of New York. Cardinal Hayes opened its doors in 1941. Like many urban Catholic High Schools, Cardinal Hayes High School is faced with financial stresses. Cardinal Hayes has developed different revenue sources but will look to continue growth in this area. The principal will be expected to collaborate on such important areas, particularly as it may relate to curriculum and student scheduling.

Job Requirements:
- Candidate must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.
- Must be familiar with Roman Catholic doctrine and Catholic curriculum for Archdiocesan schools.
- Must implement Catholic doctrine throughout the school curricular and extra-curricular activities.
- Must have understanding and comply with all Diocesan safe school policies
- Master's Degree required; Doctoral degree preferred
- Minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible academic administrative experience in the secondary education setting.
- Must have a passion for Catholic education and Catholic inner-city education.
- Must have significant managerial experience overseeing faculty and academic administration
Job Responsibilities Include:
- Motivate, lead and inspire faculty to provide the top-quality Catholic education upon which Cardinal Hayes was founded by the Archdiocese of New York.
- Provide a model of disciplined, erudite leadership for all faculty staff and students
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, development and retention of talented, qualified faculty.
- Ensure familiarity and implementation of all State, Diocesan and local school policies and directives.
- Report regularly to the president on all activities within the academic enterprise, including issues of staff discipline, attendance, and required data for informed decision making.
- Work with the president and school counsel on all union contracts and negotiations.
- Responsible for quarterly board reports and chair of academic committee of the Board of Trustees.
- Ensure all faculty and staff are compliant with diocesan safe school policies and procedures.
- Oversee curriculum review and implementation to modernize course offerings consistent with 21st century Catholic education.
- Must be familiar with best practices in curricular offerings and curriculum development.
- Must have a solid grasp of state policy issues as they relate to curriculum and curriculum requirements.
- Lead academic administration and staff through regular meeting times, professional development, and extraordinary scheduled events.
- Oversee, supervise and evaluate teachers and staff in conjunction with academic administration and department chairpersons.
- Hiring and termination of faculty and academic staff.
- Determine internal policies with the assistance of the Administration regarding admissions, transfers and dismissal of students.
- Oversee mid-term, final and Regents Examinations with academic assistant principal
- Assume the ultimate responsibility for disciplinary problems, especially those involving suspension and expulsion.
- Assume the ultimate responsibility for all athletic and extracurricular programs.
- Coordinate the agenda for faculty meetings.
- Responsible for overseeing the individual school departments.
- Prepare and submit the Mandated Services and BEDS reports for the New York State Education Department.
- Work with assigned staff on all state grant applications and processes.
- Oversee the process of academic assessment of the students.
- Coordinate the School Calendar.
- Oversee emergency situations/school closings.
Salary Range : $135,000 - $170,000
