The Riverside County Probation Department seeks to fill multiple Probation Assistant positions to support the Eastern Region of Riverside County. This posting has immediate openings in Palm Springs, Indio, and Blythe. H owever, the list may be used for future vacancies throughout Riverside County.
T he incumbent will be responsible to assist professional staff by performing a variety of routine, non-sworn support duties; and to perform other related duties as required. C ompetitive candidates will possess clerical experience in a law enforcement or criminal justice agency. Additionally, candidates with experience utilizing Juvenile Adult Management System (JAMS) are highly desired.
This journey level class reports to a Senior or Supervising Deputy Probation Officer and performs a variety of routine support duties for Deputy Probation Officers. Incumbents typically assist professional staff by performing routine data inquiries, extractions and entries in local and state law enforcement computerized databases. This class is characterized by the responsibility to assist Deputy Probation Officers (DPO) by monitoring and transporting clients and families, tracking case progress and advising of case status. Incumbents create, gather and distribute documents, files and records and may also conduct interviews to collect standard information and/or to provide routine information and instructions to clients and families.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Receives client referrals on behalf of the DPO from law enforcement, collateral agencies or community members regarding clients and initiates reviews and comparison of a variety of records for accuracy and/or consistency.
• Enters, inquires and extracts data from law enforcement computer systems; advises DPO of client's progress, additional arrests, and/or adherence to program expectations and legal requirements while on probation.
• May assist in transporting in-custody minors; may monitor and transport clients and families in non-custodial programs.
• Provides verbal and written feedback and information to professional staff; provides standard administrative instructions and information to individuals; interviews detainees to gather basic information and data.
• Logs information such as contacts, services provided, and resources used; monitors and reports to professional staff regarding client's progress including but not limited to adherence to rules of established agreements.
• May monitor base radio for potential safety issues with Deputy Probation Officers in the field and reports activities to on-site DPO.
• Assists clients in completing necessary forms and paperwork; photographs and fingerprints clients as directed by supervision.
• Collects urinalysis and DNA specimens from clients as directed by supervision; develops lists of DNA tests to be administered and generates a variety of reports.
• Makes computer inquiries and data entries into JAMS (the client management system) and other automated law enforcement systems; tracks case progress and keeps Deputy Probation Officer advised.
• Prepares routine, preformatted correspondence and documents; maintains and updates files on pre-formatted computerized screens.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPTION I
Education:Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D test.
Experience: Two years of experience equivalent to an Office Assistant III in a public agency.
OPTION II
Education:Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D test.
Experience: Two years of public contact experience in a public agency which included significant interaction with clients to obtain basic information, explain rules and procedures and advise and aid clients in obtaining appropriate services.
OPTION III
Education:Completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university, preferably with course work in social or behavioral sciences, or business/public administration.
ALL OPTIONS:
Knowledge of: Basic electronic data input and computer technology; correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; office procedures, including preparing correspondence; filing, indexing and cross-referencing methods; principles, methods, and equipment used in information processing.
Ability to: Learn the basic principles of Probation Department functions, services, and programs; understand the cultural and social factors affecting behavior patterns; communicate and maintain good relations with a wide range of social and ethnic groups; obtain and record accurate information using a variety of law enforcement computer-based systems; understand and follow written and oral directions from a variety of sources; communicate clearly orally and in writing; assist in the control of detainees in the custody of the Probation Department; follow security procedures and maintain a safe and secure environment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required (possession of a Class B California Driver's License may be required for some positions within 30 days of appointment).
Completion of first aid, CPR, county mandated, and in-service training maybe required for some positions.
Pre-Employment
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment).
Probationary Period
As an Approved Local Merit System, all County of Riverside employees, except those serving "At Will," are subject to the probationary period provisions as specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, County Resolution, or Salary Ordinance. Temporary and Per Diem employees serve at the pleasure of the agency/department head.

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 60): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local miscellaneous employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is eight (8%) percent.
- Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 60): Applicable to local miscellaneous employees 1) hired after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is seven (7%) percent.
- Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): Applicable to CalPERS local miscellaneous new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. As of July 1, 2020, the employee contribution is 7.25% and subject to change annually.
A new member is defined as any of the following:
CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members".
Contribution rates are subject to change based on the County of Riverside annual actuarial valuation.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):
0< 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)
4< 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)
Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.
SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.
HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance)
BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.
DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $461.54 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.
POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable Memorandum of Understanding.
