Title: Production Editor (Digital and Print)
Reports to: Head of Operations
Location: Washington, DC 20036
Type: Contract through 12/31/2024 with possible extension.
Work arrangement: Hybrid with 2 days/week onsite and 3 days/week remote

Our client is seeking an enthusiastic, adaptable, and detail-oriented production editor to coordinate the digital and print publication of their news magazine that produces authoritative, award-winning journalism from around the world of chemistry, including research, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. It is published by, but editorially independent of, Client, the world's largest scientific society dedicated to a single discipline. This weekly magazine reaches more than 150,000 members of our client, and its website receives more than 13 million page views per year.
Weekly magazine reaches more than 173,000 global members and over 8 million readers online. The production editor is the heart of the news production process, ensuring the smooth flow of content from journalists to readers through print and online channels. The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail, strong communication and coordination skills, and ability to work collaboratively with various teams.

What you'll do:
- Coordinate production of digital articles, editorial projects, and sponsored content with a team of writers, editors, web managers, and creative designers. Collaborate across teams to develop plans for story presentation.
- Print production: Maintain the print production schedule and ensure deadlines are met. Edit articles and quality-check PDF pages. Circulate and review graphics, chemical structures, and print layouts, and incorporates changes from editorial stakeholders.
- Online publication: Ensure output of complete, error-free articles and metadata for digital channels. Publish articles, multimedia content, and other news materials on the magazine's website. Work closely with web and creative teams, to optimize content for digital platforms, ensuring it is engaging, accessible, and search-engine optimized. Identify and correct errors in articles and update stories as needed. Work within content management systems (CMS) to apply all relevant metadata, optimize digital layouts. Contribute to streamlining workflows.
- Language edits: Proofread, and fact-check daily news stories and editorial content per established editorial standards. Read content and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors, applying Client's styling (Chicago) as necessary.
- Collaboration: Assist in the production of science-rich schematics and complex, data-filled infographics, advising editorial and production teams throughout the process to produce art and stories that are informative, accessible, and adaptable to all our platforms.
What you'll bring:
- A college degree in chemistry or related science is preferred but not required. Relevant experience in similar publications will be considered.
- Experience copyediting and proofreading multichannel content in a fast-paced working environment.
- Strong TIME MANAGEMENT
- Project management experience: ability to work across multiple functional units and keeping projects on schedule.
- Digital publishing experience. Knowledge of XML, HTML and social media engagement a plus.
- Experience with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM). Familiarity with K4 Workflow and InDesign helpful but not required.
- Good technical skills. Will be migrating to a new CMS.
- Adaptability to ever-changing publishing technologies and new workflows.
