SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.
Compensation: We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $21.40 to $22.63 and may commensurate with experience.
Position Description: The Program Assistant provides program support for food service within the dining room for breakfast and lunch. Donations support in the warehouse and clothing room and Administrative support as well as coordinates daily volunteer participation and work activities within these areas when needed. The floater position provides essential coverage and assistance to needed areas of the emergency services department.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 pm- 4:00 pm (40 hours/week), on-site
Location: 71 O street, NW, DC
Qualifications:
Required: 1-3 yrs. customer service experience
Preferred: HS Diploma or GED; 3 + yrs. customer service experience; experience providing services to the homeless
Required License/Certification: CPR/First-Aid
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of SOME Programs and services
- Time management skills with the ability to prioritize
- Customer service skills to interact with volunteers and clients
- Conflict resolution skills
- Able to communicate with diverse audiences
- Flexibility with the ability to multi-task despite competing priorities
Expected Contributions: Dining Operations Support
- Oversee food and beverage service for clients
- Provide deep cleaning of kitchen
- Act as dining room host, on rotating schedule
- Track meal count and client demographics for breakfast and lunch
- Reset dining service and clean in between meals
- Adhere to serving timeline and communicate timeline to volunteers
- Bring in food donations and stock shelves
- Organize groceries for Central Kitchen Program and package for delivery
- Assist in shower room, as needed
- Notify Public Safety employees when assistance is needed
- Deliver meals to program sites as needed
Expected Contributions: Non Monetary Donation Support
- Evaluate donations for acceptance, Receive donations and provide receipts
- Answer donor questions and explain SOME programs
- maintain order and cleanliness of the donations room
- Drive truck to pick up donations when needed
- Sort clothing items by label and size
- Maintain inventory and display clothing in clothing room for clients
- Maintain order and cleanliness of clothing room and donations room
- Sort food items and toiletries and store in the warehouse
- Stock food pantry and label items for expiration
- Assist programs with storage of items in the warehouse
- Keep statistics for usage of clothing room and participation in the warehouse
- Communicate work load for coverage needs
- Package items for program delivery as needed
- Other duties as assigned.
Expected Contributions: Administrative Support
- Act as back up to welcome volunteers, guest and visitors at reception
- Maintain cleanliness of the reception area
- Assist with the mail and phone charging administration
- Provide donation receipts
Expected Contributions: Volunteer Support
- Explain responsibilities and task requirements to volunteer groups
- Provide oversight of volunteer groups and deliver instruction to volunteers on work activities
