Job Description


The award-winning Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing was established in 1989 operating as a community drawing together faculty from nursing, sociology, demography, medicine, management, economics, and other related disciplines with a focus on the patient outcomes and health workforce policy. Collectively, the Center’s work has produced a substantial body of research documenting the impact of nursing on patient outcomes in the U.S. and abroad that has impacted clinical practices, managerial decisions, and public policies to improve healthcare outcomes in 35 countries. Focused on clinical outcomes and value of investments in nursing for patients across the lifespan and across settings, one of the Center’s foci is the study of nursing’s contribution to reducing racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in health outcomes.




The Center community includes 12+ PIs, three senior statisticians, two data analysts with expertise in large data sets, mixed methods expertise, over a dozen pre-and post-doctoral trainees, as well as a senior research manager (this would be the second), two project managers, an administrative coordinator, and graduate and undergraduate research assistants. This is a new position in the Center as the breadth and volume of our portfolio has increased as are the research opportunities the Center will pursue.




The candidate will be directly involved with the daily operations of the Center, communication and dissemination activities, reporting, strategic planning as well as tracking and planning Center activities. They will provide strategic administrative leadership and research management on a broad range of activities for the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research. Manages day-to-day center operations, collaborates with 12+ Center PIs to develop fundable ideas and then create budgets, write, edit, review and upload grant proposals. Ensures compliance with sponsor, university, school and IRB policies. Responsible for strategic communications and collaborations including institutional relationships between the Center and external research partners around the world. Executes and administers special high-level projects, including large initiatives working with hospital executives, scaling interventions and studies to national and international levels, partnering with national organizations, and planning and executing learning collaboratives. This position will develop relationships with internal and external project partners and is expected to extend beyond existing projects over time.




The position will require the candidate to work on dissemination activities and collection of performance data. Responsibilities also include serving as a liaison between PIs and other team members (including other CHOPR members, other investigators, consultants), managing and monitoring operations and timelines, and working with the PI and grants manager to manage the grant budget, review expenses, etc. A high level of independence and being a self-starter, attention to detail, familiarity with health services research, able to work in a fast-paced environment with a multitude of deadlines and competing priorities, and strong communication (verbal and writing) skills are expected. Able to work with diverse groups of individuals and with under-resourced communities. Resourceful, creative, and able to figure things out independently. Other duties as assigned. Perform these tasks with minimal supervision.




Job Responsibilities



+ Collaborates with PIs in creating fundable ideas and identify and pursue funding opportunities. Creates budgets and writes justifications for proposals. Collaborates with PIs to write, edit, and review.


+ Executes and administers large initiative working with hospital executives of Magnet® hospitals, Pathway to Excellence® hospitals, hospitals interested in pursuing those designations, federal hospitals, and safety net hospitals that includes twinning, learning collaboratives, communication, content generation, and developing relationships with internal and external project partners expected to extend beyond existing projects over time.


+ Scale nurse-led interventions originating from the Center national and internationally, including communications plan, business development and business case, development and testing of tools used in implementations, dissemination of those tools, engagement of stakeholders, and partnering with national organizations.


+ Manages pre-award process in conjunction with the Office of Nursing Research on behalf of PIs.


+ Other duties and responsibilities as assigned





Qualifications



+ Master of Science and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 7 to 10 years of experience is preferred.
