SIGMADESIGN has collaborated with a heavy industrial fabrication and machine shop seeking an experienced Project Manager to join their facility in Portland, OR. This company is one of the largest machine shops on the west coast. They have a long history of offering a wide range of equipment and services. Their products are used in a variety of industries, including mining, steel mills, power generation, cement, pulp, and paper.

Primary Function:
The Project Manager will lead engineering projects related to aftermarket parts, service, and capital equipment sales, with a primary focus on managing quotes and project execution in fabrication and machining. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and executing projects in areas such as quotes, order fulfillment, product improvement, and documentation. The role involves managing major projects, directing teams, and supporting smaller project managers. Additionally, the engineer provides technical support to product lines to strengthen market position, growth, and financial goals.
Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed quotes for fabrication and machining projects, accurately estimating materials, labor, and timeline.
- Oversee project lifecycles from quote through design, procurement, fabrication, testing, shipment, and installation, ensuring alignment with budget and timeline constraints.
- Lead decision-making on “make vs. buy” choices to meet project needs, balancing customer requirements, internal production capabilities, and financial objectives.
- Delegate tasks and coordinate efforts of engineers and staff to achieve timely and cost-effective results.
- Collaborate with customers to design equipment, balancing customer needs, production capabilities, financial targets, and resources, while utilizing existing designs and developing new ones.
- Communicate with internal departments (Purchasing, Manufacturing, Sales) and external vendors to meet project needs.
- Create 3D models, general assembly drawings, and sub-assembly drawings using Autodesk software, incorporating manufacturing processes, GD&T, and AWS welding standards into designs. Assist in integrating designs into the company’s MRP system.
- Manage product development projects, ensuring designs align with manufacturing constraints and capacity.
- Address customer technical issues, providing solutions in a timely and professional manner.
- Assist in product testing as needed.
- Continuously build product knowledge to develop standards, training, and sales materials.
- Support strategic company initiatives, such as Lean processes.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)
- 4-6 years of engineering experience, with recent quoting experience in fabrication and machining environments required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical) or an Associate’s degree with substantial relevant experience.
- Proven project management skills in a manufacturing setting, with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
- Ability to interpret complex technical instructions in mathematical or diagram formats.
- Proficient in applying mathematical operations for statistical analysis, including frequency distributions, reliability, ANOVA, correlation, chi-square, and sampling theory.
- Skilled in using personal computers and Autodesk software.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the company’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Ability to pass drug test and background checks upon acceptance of an offer.
Work Environment:
Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers.
