About the Job
We are seeking a full-time Prototype Developer 2 at our Olathe, KS location. Seeking a talented exhibit / display / model builder to join our Corporate Design team. You’ll be part of a multi-disciplinary group of designers and builders that design and develop in support of Garmin’s worldwide trade show, sales, and retail efforts. Your talents and craftsmanship will primarily support our growing marine, aviation, outdoor, and fitness markets.
Join us in our 35,000 square foot design studio and well-equipped shop with extensive design and prototyping technology and equipment. We’re looking for a motivated individual with the technical abilities, problem solving skills, and positive attitude to collaborate with our highly skilled ID design team.
Essential Functions
- Execute the construction planning and fabrication of concepts, prototypes, displays and exhibits for the various engineering, tradeshow, sales, and marketing efforts the team is supporting.
- Collaborate with Designers, Engineering, and Marketing, to explore, innovate, and execute world-class solutions.
- Utilize your knowledge of fabrication processes, software, computer aided machining, and shop tools to achieve project goals and high quality standards.
- Leads and takes ownership for small moderately complex projects and/or sub-projects as part of a greater project guiding the direction of the project to obtain design intent and adherence to project budget and schedule
- Collaborates/adds value in design reviews, manages and completes multiple significant tasks concurrently and within required timeframes using sound model making and prototyping principles, and may assist with estimations of effort level for a task/project
- Understands clients’ needs as they relate to model making and/or prototyping and demonstrates proficient model finishing skill set in project tasks
- Demonstrates knowledge of Model Shop safety procedures for shop/individual tool use
- Leverages PC based computer knowledge in Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator and applies it to project
Basic Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Model Making, or related field AND a minimum of 3 years prototype or model making experience OR a minimum of 3 years work experience as a Garmin Prototype Developer
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrates proficient understanding and experience with a variety of materials such as model board, wood, metal, plastics, urethanes, and similar materials
- Demonstrates proficient experience working with Model Shop equipment such as saws, milling machines, routers, jointers, drill press, sanders and hand tools
- Demonstrates PC based computer knowledge as it applies to model making, such as use of Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator for prototyping projects
- Demonstrates strong problem solving, organizational and analytical skills
Desired Qualifications
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
- Experience programming in CNC
- Experience working with GibbsCAM
