Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years experience working as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with high acuity patients. This is a locked unit within Bridgewater State Hospital.
Bridgewater State Hospital provides evidence-based, trauma-informed behavioral health services to individuals housed at BSH for pre-trial evaluations of competency to stand trial, those deemed incompetent to stand trial or not guilty by reason of insanity, “aid in sentencing” evaluations, and for those requiring inpatient psychiatric hospitalization who meet the criteria for strict security.

- Oversee and lead various committees, including MSO, Medical Executive Committee, and P&T committee, while actively participating in case conferences, second opinions, clinical leadership, and representation on hospital committees, projects, task forces, and PI initiatives. Serve as a liaison with advocates and families, represent the hospital in the community and state, and review referrals for admission.
- Advocate for patients, reviewing individual practice patterns, leading peer review processes, participating in multidisciplinary teams and court proceedings, and engaging in clinically based PI and best practice projects. Conduct quantitative and qualitative chart reviews, lead morbidity and mortality reviews, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including Joint Commission Standards.
- Manage the recruitment, evaluation, and retention of psychiatry and medical candidates, evaluating clinical competency, approving licensed independent practitioner privileges, and conducting ongoing performance reviews. Coordinate the Medical Student rotation, providing orientation, lectures, case conferences, and training for other departments.
- Provide direct psychiatric care to patients, including evaluation, psychopharmacologic treatment, psychotherapy, assessment for movement disorders, court evaluations, and discharges. Demonstrate knowledge of applicable nursing services, TJC standards, and ensure age-specific competency and patient safety.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all clinical and medical departments, including Psychology, Social Work, Pharmacy Services, and general medical services. Ensure adequate staffing for Psychiatry, Medical, and Nursing services, including 24-hour on-call availability.
EDUCATION:
- Must have a minimum of two years experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner working with high acuity patients. This is a locked unit within Bridgewater State Hospital, working with all male patients
- Graduation from an accredited educational program designed to prepare the graduate for practice as a PMHNP.
EXPERIENCE:
- The PMHNP works under the supervision of the Staff Psychiatrist and Medical Director, adhering to established policies and state guidelines.
- Provides comprehensive patient assessments, plans of care, and medication management, monitoring and altering treatment as necessary within approved protocols.
- Ensures accurate and thorough documentation of patient care, including cultural considerations and individualized treatment plans.
- Supports adherence to established standards of psychiatric care and participates in on-call schedules and facility committees as directed.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual judgments and actions, including adherence to formulary and medication administration requirements.
- Good moral character as required by MGL c. 112, § 74 and as established by Board policy.
- 2 years’ experience as an APRN in a residential healthcare institution working with high acuity patients.
- The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner provides expert consultation and education to clinical nurses and leads multidisciplinary efforts to improve the quality of psychological care for patients and families.
- The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner supports clinical nurses in planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients with psychological manifestations of physical and psychiatric conditions.
- The role includes consultation and teaching strategies to enhance the clinical knowledge development, skill acquisition, and judgment of clinical nurses and other clinicians.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid Massachusetts RN licensure in good standing (reciprocal applicants may submit applications for RN licensure and APRN licensure at the same time).
- Current PMHNP certification granted by a Massachusetts Nursing Board recognized certifying organization, such as ANCC.
