Job Summary:
The Psychiatric RN provides direct and individualized care to patients with mental health conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They collaborate with psychiatrists, clinicans, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement treatment plans. The RN is responsible for assessing patients’ mental health status, administering medications when applicable, and offering therapeutic interventions to help manage and improve their psychiatric conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment:
- Perform initial and ongoing assessments of patients' mental and physical health conditions.
- Collect patient history, observe symptoms, and monitor behavioral changes.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans and make necessary adjustments.
- Care Planning:
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop personalized treatment plans.
- Implement nursing interventions that promote mental health and manage psychiatric symptoms.
- Provide support to patients in crisis situations and perform suicide risk assessments.
- Medication Administration:
- Administer psychiatric medications, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers as deemed necessary.
- Monitor patients for side effects and adverse reactions to medications.
- Educate patients and families about the effects, purpose, and side effects of psychotropic medications or medication assisted therapy.
- Therapeutic Interventions:
- Provide therapeutic communication and support to patients in managing mental health conditions.
- Facilitate group therapy sessions and individual therapy.
- Use de-escalation techniques in managing patients with acute psychiatric conditions.
- Crisis Management:
- Respond to psychiatric emergencies, including suicide attempts, overdoses, aggressive behavior, and panic attacks.
- Assist in creating safety plans and managing patients in psychiatric distress.
- Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of patient progress, treatment plans, and interventions.
- Ensure accurate charting of patient medications, assessments, and follow-up care.
- Patient Education and Advocacy:
- Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and self-care.
- Advocate for patients' rights and ensure they are receiving adequate care in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Communicate regularly with the interdisciplinary team to discuss patient progress.
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and care coordination activities.
- Liaise with community resources and services to support patients' long-term mental health needs.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing school.
- Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Tennessee.
- Experience: Prior experience in psychiatric nursing related to mental health/substance use disorder treatment is required.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required; Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification (PMH-BC) is a preferred.
