The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. HJF is seeking a Military Behavioral Health Psychologist to assist with suicide prevention efforts and teaching related workshops. The ideal candidate will have experience with developing continuing education training materials, evidenced based therapies, adult learning and teaching, and suicide prevention. Candidates with prior training and experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) are strongly preferred. Applicants must possess the ability to provide behavioral health subject matter expertise that is culturally sensitive in a manner that is accessible and inclusive which demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
This position will be in support of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP), which is based in Rockville, MD. The Military Behavioral Health Psychologist will assist with activities related to CDP’s mission, which is to lead the development of a community of culturally mindful and clinically competent providers through the delivery of high-quality training and education, the convening of experts, and the dissemination of research-based treatment and the latest topics in military behavioral health. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) provides administrative and management support to the Center. CDP strives to be the central hub for the Military Health System (MHS) in the development and implementation of training and education to clinicians in order to ensure that all service members, veterans, and their families receive quality behavioral healthcare that meets their unique needs.
Responsibilities:- Serves as a suicide prevention subject matter expert across the Center, contributing to projects and programs where needed.
- Develops and delivers suicide prevention presentations, workshops, and other curriculum-based learning tools in online and in-person delivery formats to include presenting multi-day, evidence-based psychotherapy (EBP) workshops. Additional areas of focus are military culture and military/deployment related behavioral health issues.
- Creates and provides consultation services to military and civilian behavioral health providers who have been trained by CDP to provide continued learning support and ensure evidence-based psychotherapy practices are being used with fidelity.
- Ensures that workshops and consultation materials are updated regularly by performing frequent literature reviews on evidence-based psychology practices, telehealth, and consultation with national subject matter experts. Makes necessary changes, additions, and updates to educational materials as needed. Coordinates with military and civilian experts to organize education materials.
- Serves as an active member and/or lead on Center-level special interest groups and assists with projects/programs.
- Contributes to CDP’s subject matter expert blog posts, podcasts, videos, infographics, asynchronous training materials, and other additional educational activities as needed. Prepares scholarly manuscripts for publication and presents at national and/or international conferences to disseminate the work conducted by the Center.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Education and Experience
- Doctoral degree required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Candidates should be knowledgeable and experienced in the area of suicide
prevention with training/experience using an evidence-based treatment protocol for suicide prevention (CBT-SP, BCBT, DBT) preferred. - Candidates should have experience delivering professional presentations to adult learners including experience with curriculum development of presentations and other materials for adult continuing education.
- Knowledge of evidenced based military behavioral health care and suicide prevention literature, especially as it relates to military connected individuals.
- Subject matter expertise in EBPs and suicide prevention includes the ability to integrate the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences, such that the candidate is able to provide training and consultation that is empirically sound as well as culturally competent, inclusive, and accessible across a wide variety of contexts.
- A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as it applies to the workplace and to behavioral healthcare.
- Excellent communication skills including writing appropriate reports, articles, white papers, and providing presentations to large audiences.
Physical Capabilities
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
