Definition
Under general direction, is responsible for providing diagnosis, consultation and medical treatment to patients and/or coordinating, managing, or providing consultation and advice to specialized medical programs within Columbus Public Health; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Performs medical assessment of patient condition by conducting personal interviews and physical examinations;
Collects blood or other specimens for testing; performs and/or reviews diagnostic tests;
Diagnoses specific diseases or other medical conditions;
Determines appropriate medical treatment for disease and other conditions based on medical knowledge and standards, accepted medical and public health practices;
Prescribes medication and/or behavior changes in order to control, prevent and/or eliminate medical conditions and diseases;
Treats diseases by explaining the nature of the disease to the patient, administering medication, and taking other therapeutic measures as appropriate; recommends follow-up care or therapy;
Accurately documents medical information on patient records; maintains patient confidentiality;
Reviews and signs charts for other clinicians in the clinic in order to ensure appropriate medical treatment;
Consults with public health officials and private physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases and conditions;
Reviews clients' charts for quality assurance, peer review or insurance purposes;
Prepares correspondence to other health professionals regarding specific clients and/or conditions and diseases;
Prepares and presents at conferences, seminars, or continuing education classes; maintains currency and/or obtains certifications/licenses; stays abreast of innovations and changes in the field of medicine;
Writes, reviews and updates medical protocols and policies; establishes operational policies and guidelines;
Provides clinical supervision to clerical staff, students, residents, and fellows in health care specialties;
Oversees staff training and development in order to ensure consistency within the program;
Participates in coalitions, advisory groups and other related committees;
Delegates through medical orders or protocols the direction for clinical care or disease management in a specific population;
Serves as a resource to community physicians in the management of specific public health issues;
May supervise the activities of employees assigned to administration or medical support activities; provides
guidance into clinical skills; provides input into performance evaluations;
May assist in or direct grant-writing activities in order to secure adequate funding for the program;
May be responsible for compiling information and monitoring the budget and other aspects of the fiscal operation;
May coordinate with mental health, legal, and other government agencies on public health related issues as needed;
May serve in a public health physician advisory or functional role supporting departmental activities in the case of a disaster or emergency;
May assist in the development of overall departmental plans, goals, and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of Ohio. Certificates of specialization may be required for some positions and will be incorporated into job postings, as appropriate.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
