Job Description
The Water Department Pump & Purification Technician maintains the Water Distribution system by performing installation, maintenance and repair work on wells, well houses, pumps and pumping stations, booster stations, pressure reducing stations, storage tanks and individual pumping/purification systems. This job is required to have both a Class I Drinking Water Treatment Operator and a Class II Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification.* The work is performed under the supervision of the Water Operations Supervisor.
The job requires knowledge of the methods of water distribution including wells and well houses, pumps and pumping stations, booster stations, pressure reducing stations, storage tanks, and individual pumping/purification systems. It also requires additional knowledge of remote and electronic monitoring, recording, communications and alarm systems.
The job requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public.
The work environment is a public building and outdoor environment that may include exposure to hazardous chemicals and gases, confined space, elevated tanks, working in adverse weather conditions, traffic hazards and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment. The noise level is generally moderate but with occasional exposure to noisy and/or loud equipment.
The job is an on-call position, responding to emergency situations. Employees designated as immediate response personnel must live thirty (30) minutes or less from their usual daily work site.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains the Water Distribution system, including but not limited to, wells and well houses, pumps and pumping stations, booster stations, pressure reducing stations, storage tanks, and individual pumping/purification systems to ensure the delivery of safe drinking water in compliance with all applicable federal and state standards.
- Installs, operates, maintains, and repairs chlorination equipment.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs pumps and motors, electronic monitoring, recording, communications and alarm systems. Installs, maintains, and repairs pump control, pressure relief, pressure reducing, altitude valves, and related systems. Installs, maintains, and repairs pipes, plumbing, and fittings in well houses and booster stations.
- Monitors, calibrates, and adjusts system flow and operations by checking and recording readings, operational data, and related records.
- Takes water samples for laboratory quality testing to ensure compliance with federal, state, and other applicable drinking water standards.
- Maintains telemetry system. Maintains records, documents, and logs.
- Operates light and medium equipment including, but not limited to, air compressor, jack hammer, dump truck, backhoe, loader, excavator, boom truck, and lift.
- Maintains roads to wells, storage tanks and booster stations. Performs snow removal, as needed.
- Operates power equipment and hand tools.
- Operates specialized electrical testing equipment.
- Performs maintenance on buildings and grounds including, but not limited to, painting, cleaning, herbicide application, mowing, and related landscaping and maintenance duties.
- Disinfects and tests new equipment before putting it into service.
- Responds to customer complaints on water quality and/or pressure.
- Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED; and
- Flagging certification;
- CPR and First Aid certification;
- Class I Drinking Water Treatment Operator certification*;
- Class II Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification*;
- Class B CDL*;
- Two (2) years of equipment repair & maintenance experience is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
*Hiring Note:
- The Pump and Purification Technician position requires a Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire date; Class I Drinking Water Treatment Operator certification; and Class II Distribution Operator certifications within eighteen (18) months of hire. Failure to acquire these certifications by the established date will violate the terms of the position and will result in layoff from the position.
CLASSIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of:
- Methods, techniques, and objectives of maintenance of water distribution equipment and related systems including wells and well houses, pumps and pumping stations, booster stations, pressure reducing stations, storage tanks, and individual pumping/purification systems;
- Methods, techniques and objectives of installing, maintaining and upgrading remote and electronic monitoring, recording, communications and alarm systems, including but not limited to, systems in wells and well houses, pumps and pumping stations, booster stations, pressure reducing stations, storage tanks and individual pumping/purification systems;
- Methods, techniques and objectives of troubleshooting and repairing systems;
- Operation of chlorination and other related purification and treatment methods, techniques, and objectives;
- Operation of specialized electrical testing equipment;
- Operation of specialized electrical control and monitoring systems;
- Operation of specialized pump control, pressure relief, pressure reducing, altitude valves, and related systems;
- Water quality and purity testing methods, techniques, and objectives;
- Operation of light and medium equipment including, but not limited to, air compressor, jack hammer, dump truck, backhoe, loader, excavator, boom truck, and lift;
- Operation of power equipment and hand tools;
- Operation of specialized electrical testing equipment;
- Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications;
- Methods, techniques, and objectives of maintaining pump and lift station buildings and grounds;
- Basic knowledge of welding techniques (arc and mig);
- Basic building trades including plumbing, carpentry, painting, and related skills;
- State, local, and other applicable building, safety, and health codes and regulations;
- Federal regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to confined space, elevated tanks, electrical equipment lockout/tagout, chemical handling, use of light and medium equipment, power tools, ladders and power lifts, and repair and maintenance materials.
Skill and Ability to:

- Perform maintenance on buildings and grounds including, but not limited to, painting, cleaning, herbicide application, mowing, and related landscaping and maintenance duties;
- Disinfect and test new equipment before putting it into service;
- Respond to customer complaints on water quality and/or pressure;
- Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, maps, and diagrams;
- Maintain maintenance records, logs, and documentation;
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times;
- Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance;
- Complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations;
- Perform all duties in accordance with City policies and procedures with regard for personal safety and that of other employees and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to keyboard or type, handle materials or manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms; operate a motor vehicle or job-related equipment; and work on roofs and in confined spaces. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity, speaking ability and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
