Job Description
The Surgical Technician Intern is in a specialized internal training program. This position will learn to perform technical skills and provide assistance, under the supervision of surgeons, certified surgical assistants, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. This position works under the supervision of the registered nurse in delivering safe, effective care to the patient during the intra operative period. This position effectively interacts with patients and health care team members, while maintaining the surgical department standards; participates in surgical procedures on patients of all age groups, pediatric through geriatrics.
Class Length is 10 months; 4 months classroom and 6 months lecture with addition of clinical rotation.
Progression in the program requires the student to maintain a grade average of 80 and complete/passing lab/practicum competencies as written in the Student Handbook.
Responsibilities
- Follows current policies and procedures of the department
- Performs all responsibilities/duties required, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
- Develop comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
- Must complete the minimum case mix delineated in curriculum.
- Demonstrates accountability for all expected course curriculum requirements.
- Assist in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization.
- May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.
Minimum Experience
- 0-1 year Previous health care experience Preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Upon Hire Required.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Possesses a strong character and unyielding sense of integrity with "a surgical conscious".
- Exceptional attention to detail and follow through very important.
- Ability to stand for long periods, strength to hold extremities, and/or instrument retractors for long periods.
- Possesses ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality and accuracy.
- Good memory, able to anticipate surgeon and patient needs well in advance.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions, active class participation, function as a team member.
- Attends class regularly according to the student handbook and has no more than 3 absences for the duration of the course. Tardies are subject to stringent guidelines during the program as referenced in the student handbook.
- Must maintain grade average of 80% with 3 attempts or less to complete and pass Practicums/Competencies.
