R&D Corosion Co-Op - Novelis Global R&T

The Novelis Kennesaw team is seeking a Corrosion R&D Co-Op. The person in this role will report to a Senior Scientist. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting electrochemical testing, and microstructure analysis to validate a corrosion model for automotive aluminum alloys. The correlation between corrosion performance, microstructure, and electrochemical data will provide insights to material property-process-performance relationships, which will be instrumental to alloy design. This will enable Novelis to meet customers’ key requirements in the early stage and to shorten the R&D process.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate material preparation and submission through LIMS and act as liaison between Project and Laboratory teams
• Conduct laboratory tests, analyze and interpret results including electrochemistry, microscopy, and metallography
• Present and disseminate results to R&D and value stream stakeholders
• Communicate openly, proactively, and professionally as the liaison between multiple teams to navigate the project

Minimum Qualifications:

• Materials science undergraduate junior/senior
• Lab work experience (safety, experiment design, and chemical handling)
• Basic knowledge of electrochemistry, corrosion, and metallurgy
• Excellent written and oral communication
• Must be available for at least 6 months starting in June 2025

Preferred Qualifications:

• Materials science graduate level
• Experience in microscopy and metallographic analysis
• Basic knowledge of metal processing including but not limited to heat treatment and mechanical testing
• Data analysis: Analyzing and interpreting data sets, using statistical software (e.g., Minitab)
• COMSOL or relevant materials modelling experience
