FULL DESCRIPTION: As the R&D Manager, Protein Chemistry, you will manage the team that is responsible for delivering new reagents to enable new biological workflows. You will oversee a team that develops reagents and assays to enable new on-chip capabilities for biological workflows. In this role, you will also be responsible for transferring technology from R&D to Manufacturing, which will involve working with internal teams and suppliers. The ideal candidate will have prior experience managing a team that has developed reagents for the life sciences.
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Manage an interdisciplinary team of Ph.D. level chemists and engineers to deliver new reagents, and assays to enable biological workflows on various platforms.
- Drive R&D efforts to deliver reagents to enable new assays and protein characterization capabilities (western blot, IEF, SDS PAGE, SPR). Examples of reagents include surface chemistry reagents, critical raw materials, and functionalized microparticles. Master in protein (HRP, AP, Acridinium, Biotin) and microparticle conjugation.
- Lead direct reports in the characterization and testing of new reagents. Design appropriate functional tests on various platforms to validate reagent and assay performance.
- Recommend lead reagent and assay candidates for additional testing by internal partners.
- Work with internal teams to perform workflow testing on new reagents once lead candidates have been selected. Modify R&D directions and activities based upon the data.
- Oversee the technology transfer of new reagents from R&D to Manufacturing. This includes relevant documentation and appropriate quality control (QC) procedures. Support the scale-up of reagent manufacturing.
- Collaborate with suppliers to synthesize custom reagents and to characterize reagents using appropriate analytical techniques, as needed.
- Work with other groups within the company to make progress on development programs.
- Provide professional development and learning opportunities for direct reports. Act as a mentor to team members. Provide constructive coaching and timely performance feedback. Conduct formal reviews with team members.
- Model technical problem-solving leadership to resolve issues that arise in R&D and be responsible for completing projects on time.

- Experience developing IVD and life science reagents.
- Proficiency in protein (HRP, AP, acridinium, biotin) and microparticle conjugation
- Reagent development experience. Bio-conjugation experience - particularly involving the chemical modification and purification of proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids.
- Prior experience with the synthesis and purification of protein-fluorophore conjugates.
- Surface and interfacial chemistry expertise - especially with the chemical modification and characterization of inorganic and polymeric surfaces.
- Proficiency in analytical techniques used to purify and characterize both macromolecules and small molecules, such as chromatography (IEX, SEC and affinity), fluorescence, and protein characterization techniques.
- Fundamental understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological phenomena which govern biological assays. Experience with immunoassay assays is a plus.
- Proficient in analytical techniques used to purify and characterize both macromolecules and small molecules, such as chromatography (IEX, SEC and affinity), fluorescence, and protein characterization techniques.
- Technology transfer and supplier management experience, i.e., transferring designs and processes from R&D to internal manufacturing teams and to suppliers.
