Radar Signal Processing Engineer-Technical Staff - MIT Lincoln Laboratory
Lexington, MA
About the Job
MIT Lincoln Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Radar Signal Processing Engineer to join our dynamic team and revolutionize the way we perceive and decode signals. You will play a key role in the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge radar signal processing algorithms that support real world missions. We're particularly interested in candidates with a background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, who bring a strong foundation in signal processing techniques.
As a member of the Airborne Radar Systems and Techniques group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, you will work on high-performance sensor systems as part of a team with diverse technical backgrounds. We prototype radar and imaging sensors for wide-area surveillance, and work to mature algorithms to detect small objects in challenging environments. Projects typically involve a mix of hardware and software development, as well as algorithm design. Teams work together to understand foundational physical principles, design and build one-of-a-kind sensor systems, architect and execute flight test data collections, develop and integrate novel processing techniques, and explore advanced countermeasures that degrade sensor performance. Staff projects typically partner across the Department of Defense to transition work onto platforms that operate around the globe, and perform impactful and relevant missions.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and optimize radar signal processing algorithms for improved target detection, tracking, and identification
- Analyze and interpret radar data to extract meaningful insights and enhance system performance
- Conduct in-depth research to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in signal processing and radar technologies
- Design, simulate, and implement signal processing algorithms using tools like MATLAB, Python, or similar with the opportunity to incorporate advanced AI/ML techniques in the areas of automatic target recognition, signal de-noising, target tracking, and interference mitigation
- Work on real-time implementation of algorithms on embedded platforms for practical applications
- Team up with hardware engineers to set system requirements, predict system performance, and ensure smooth integration and compatibility between processing algorithms, data types, and prototype hardware
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and execute experiments that include both ground-based and airborne sensors
- Prepare technical documentation, including test plans, interface control documents, reports, and presentations, as well as technical presentations outlining project details and status
- Share new ideas and intuitions with your colleagues, collaborators and others in our technical communities through mentorship, education, and outreach opportunities
Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. Specialization signal processing or experience with radar is a plus. In lieu of a PhD, we will consider applicants with a Master’s degree that have 5 years of relevant work experience
- Strong theoretical foundation in signal processing techniques, such as filtering, modulation, and estimation
- Proficiency in programming languages like MATLAB, Python, C/C++ for algorithm development and simulation
- Solid understanding of statistical signal processing and machine learning concepts
- Experience with radar systems, remote sensing, or signal/image processing applications, their components, and associated challenges is highly desirable but not required
- Familiarity with RF hardware (amplifiers, antennas, filters) and digital processing and control systems (FPGAs, GPUs, CPUs) is desirable but not required
- Willingness to travel occasionally to participate in (or lead) offsite field tests, data collection campaigns, exercises, and meetings
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Effective communication skills to present complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- A passion for innovation and a desire to contribute to advancements in radar technology
Join us in an intellectually stimulating environment where you'll have the opportunity to apply your expertise to real-world challenges in radar signal processing. We value diversity, and encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds. If you're ready to join a team with a passion for pushing the boundaries of radar technology, we'd love to hear from you!
