Responsibilities:Under the direction of the Chief Radiation therapist and the Senior Radiation Oncologist, the Radiation Therapist utilizes written instructions from the radiation oncologists to perform a variety of technical procedures including tumor localization and the administration of ionizing radiation to patient 15 years of age and older for the treatment of malignant and selected benign conditions. This position requires travel between Cooperstown and Oneonta locations as necessary.
- Administers radiation therapy treatment to patients 15 years or older on radiation therapy treatment units within the Radiation Oncology Program according to departmental procedures.
- Verifies dose per written prescription plan in Aria – as observed by the Chief Therapist and review of weekly chart checks.
- Delivers radiation dose according to written prescription and accurately documents the delivery of the treatment as documented by physician and physics review of the treatment record and by review by the Chief Therapist.
- Observes patients daily for reactions and immediately reports any adverse reactions to the Radiation Oncologist or the Radiation Oncology Nurse .
- Practices safety precautions to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure to staff or patients as recorded on monthly radiation badge report and by physician feedback.
- Supports brachytherapy procedures by carrying out simulations under the supervision of Physicist and Radiation Oncologist.
- Documents treatment SSD’s weekly and verifies markings.
- Verifies dose per written prescription plan in Aria – as observed by the Chief Therapist and review of weekly chart checks.
- Performs all necessary functions prior to delivering radiation treatment.
- Participates and documents the education of the patient and/or family regarding the radiotherapy process and advises then on self-care during the treatment course.
- Assists with production of custom blocks and immobilization devices.
- Simulates the patient by delineating proper areas as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist in the Physician clinical treatment-planning note, utilizing a CT Simulator.
- Upon completion of simulation, documents all appropriate patient information required to adequately treat the patient into the patient record and completes all encounters for the pre/post simulation.
- Participates and documents the education of the patient and/or family regarding the radiotherapy process and advises then on self-care during the treatment course.
- Maintains competent level of knowledge for self and provides instruction to students and residents.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining and documenting required CME credits to maintain certification and licensure.
- Provides clinical instruction to students and other assigned personnel as requested with at least adequate ratings as provided by student evaluation form.
- Attends 80% of weekly chart rounds and monthly department meetings. Reviews minutes of missed meetings.
- Attends all mandatory in-service programs or review videos as documented on annual in-service record.
- Maintains a passing annual competency performance on all treatment modalities.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining and documenting required CME credits to maintain certification and licensure.
- Maintains a thorough understanding of department equipment and machines, operates them correctly, recognizes any malfunctions and notifies appropriate individuals.
- Assures that daily output checks and proper warm up procedures are carried on radiation therapy units and documented in QC log.
- Maintains familiarity with the physical and geometric characteristics of the radiation equipment, and the proper operation of all controls.
- Responsible for detecting malfunctions, carrying out first line maintenance, and communicating with the service engineer of each machine. Notifies physicist and/or appropriate individual.
- Maintains familiarity with all emergency and downtime policies, and procedures within the department.
- Assures that daily output checks and proper warm up procedures are carried on radiation therapy units and documented in QC log.
- Participates in the department’s Quality Management and Performance Improvement programs.
- Participates in the quarterly Quality Management meeting and weekly chart reviews greater than 80% of the time, unless excused, as measured by attendance sheets.
- Assists in assuring that therapy-related policies and procedures are created and updates as required (yearly updates).

- Schedules treatment patients, codes service and completes daily charge log.
- Responsible for accurately coding all services provided to each patient and entering in the daily treatment.

- Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed.
Education:
- Graduate of a two or four year radiation therapist training program, required
Experience:
- Experience as a radiation therapist, preferred
- New graduates will be considered
Licensure/Certificates:
- NYS Temporary Permit, required
- ARRT Registered as a Radiologic Technologist/Therapist within 180 days from date of hire, required
- NYS Registered as a Radiologic Technologist/Therapist within 180 days from date of hire, required
- BLS Certification, preferred
