The role of the Referral Specialist is to coordinate all patient referrals at the request of the providers, obtain/review pre-authorization/pre-certification, and coordinate communications with physician offices, companies, third-party payers and case managers; documenting appropriately within the medical record. The Referral Specialist will ensure appropriate appointments and follow-up appointments in the department following referral requests/visits and ensure documentation from specialists/offices is obtained, filed in the chart and forwarded to companies/payers as appropriate. The Referral Specialist will perform patient registration tasks and procedures as requested as well as assist in the clinical area as trained and requested.

Responsibilities:Clerical/Administrative
· Initiates all referral requests within 24 hours on business days documenting all stages of the referral process within all EMR programs and communicating to the appropriate people regarding injury case.
· Coordinate and schedule specialist exams within clinic.
· Obtain and/or documents approvals from the Third-Party Payers for payment for services as directed or indicated via protocols.
· Meet with referring physician offices periodically to communicate any clinic updates.
· Track and monitor referring physicians and referral patterns.
· Perform patient service rep activities as directed.
· Register patients as needed.
· Answer patient phone calls regarding scheduling and billing.
· Assist in scheduling of office staff to facilitate appropriate staffing levels based on patient volume.
Qualifications:
Requirements
Education:
Health Care Related Coursework.
Experience:
1-3 Years of Experience in Clinical Office Setting.
Preferred
Education:
Medical Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant
Clerical specialist or experience as a Referral Specialist in a clinic setting will be considered in lieu of required education.
