Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts BCLS Bachelors Degree in Nursing Minimum of 5 years of radiation or ambulatory nursing experience required, with demonstrated clinical competence and professional accountability. Managerial or leadership experience desirable Nurse Manager Radiation Oncology Accountable for the facilitation of excellence in patient care delivery, operational efficiencies, and compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and practices. This full-time role has managerial oversight for Radiation Oncology. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Practice Is able, and at times may need, to perform all nursing clinical/patient care responsibilities appropriately and effectively within the unit and scope of nursing practice which can include: In collaboration with APP/MD team, perform assessment of patients for appropriateness for radiation. Appropriately administers medications to patients. Perform ancillary procedures – (e.g. port flushes, phlebotomy/ sample collections, dressing changes, etc.) Provides relevant education to patients and family members as applicable to their radiation treatments. Ensures patient encounters are appropriately documented and completed. Serves and supports triage responsibilities withinRadiation. Ensures In-Basket messages are addressed and/or appropriately triaged. Establishes and maintains an environment that is patient/family focused and sensitive to the diverse needs of patients and staff. Promotes and supports staff development. Schedules and facilitates educational offerings with both internal and external speakers. Designs and implements educational offerings and policies for new procedures in the department. Ensures HealthStream assignments for staff cover the content they need to complete their jobs. Provides daily supervision, support, and assessment of care, to nurses and support staff to facilitate the delivery of high-quality patient care. Establishes effective accountability systems to assure patient care standards are met. Ensures all patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with age specific criteria. Assists staff and leadership in the provision of nursing care using, but not limited to, the philosophy of MGH Patient Care Services and regulatory agency standards. Performs other duties as needed or assigned. Resource Management Promotes economy of time, efficiencies, and productivity for the nursing staff and support teams, including monitoring and facilitating workflows and staffing levels daily across the 4 areas of rad onc on the main campus. In collaboration with the Nurse Director, evaluates, and develops staffing patterns to support patient care needs and unit operations. Leads time off/vacation requests/weekly schedules/payroll. Collaborates on patient care assignments based on staff competencies, patient acuity, illness complexity and knowledge of technology. Collaborates with the Nursing Director regarding budgetary, supply, and equipment needs and priorities of the unit. Ensures each area of Rad Onc has the supplies needed to function properly Makes decisions that support appropriate use of human, fiscal and environmental resources for patient care. Interviews and hires candidates to fill vacant nursing, allied health positions and participates in the interview process to fill vacant leadership positions. Implements and provides staffing corrective action measures where appropriate. Collaborates, coordinates, and updates as needed, staff orientation activities. Participates with the Nursing Leadership Team on annual reviews and on updates of position descriptions and proficiencies. Applies knowledge of current and relevant issues and changes in nursing, social and medical science to improve patient care and foster staff development. Collaborates with the leadership team on capital and personnel budget needs; monitors and supervises budget variances. Educates staff regarding department/center/program and hospital budgets to promote awareness of individual accountability and responsibility for department/center/program fiscal management. Manages physician schedule changes. Ensures the environment is conducive to patient care/clinical practice. Leadership Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration through effective communications and negotiations. Attend each disease center’s clinical collaboratives representing nursing. Member of radiation safety workgroup and quality meetings. Interprets and communicates to staff members all changes in standards of care, nursing practice activities, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Monitors compliance with policies and procedures. Monitors Bluesight 3 times a week for narcotic administration compliance. Participates and serves as a radiation representative in service line, hospital and entity-wide committees as a key member and leader of Radiation Oncology. Collaborates with all Rad Onc leaders across all Rad Onc sites within MGH and MGB. Investigates safety reports and/or complaints and initiates appropriate QI and resolution action(s) Participates in Quality and Safety initiatives, including root cause analysis, formulation and implementation of corrective action and monitoringof action outcomes. Supports and coach’s unit Excellence Everyday Champions for Magnet and JCAHO readiness initiatives and activities. Communicates and documents pertinent incidents, actions, and follow-up to the Nurse Director in a timely manner. Coordinates problem-solving activities with the staff and arranges meetings as needed. Conducts annual performance appraisals for staff – including staff competency assessments. Collaborates with Human Resource representatives re: corrective action and initiates appropriate corrective action with employees. Collaborates with the Nurse Director to develop staff meeting agendas, conduct the meeting, and disseminates appropriate information to staff. Fosters an environment where interdisciplinary collaboration related to patient care needs are paramount. Ensures a practice environment that maintains high professional standards of clinical care and conduct. Promotes professional development of staff through the MGH Clinical Recognition Program, and other mechanisms, including specialty certification for nursing and support staff. Professional Development Works with the Nurse Director to ensure that staff achieve competency in generic and specialty knowledge skills. Evaluates effectiveness of orientation program in collaboration with the Nurse Director. Provides support to preceptors. Participates in MGH Leadership and development opportunities as appropriate to further professional development. Applies knowledge of current and relevant issues and changes in nursing, social and medical science to improve patient care and foster staff development. Participates in and promotes evidence-based practice and professional research. Performs other related duties as directed.
