Responsibilities:
The Unit Secretary/Unit Clerk performs receptionist, clerical duties as appropriate to the area of clinical practice. Serves as a receptionist; greets and assists patients, visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff
Answers telephones and verbally communicates effectively, responding promptly to general information, requesting and conveying messages
Participates in maintaining complete, accurate medical records, and current patient/unit data within the information system, and on appropriate forms
Performs routine clerical tasks including order entry/data retrieval, as appropriate to the clinical area
Assists in providing prompt response to patients’ call systems, refers requests promptly and appropriately
Places calls to physicians' offices and to other departments as requested
Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patients’ rights
Maintains patient confidentiality
Maintains effective and timely communication with nurses, other staff, patients and families
Keeps nurses’ station clean and clutter free
Participates in orientation of personnel to the unit
Maintains cooperative working relationships and supports staff in the performance of their duties
Monitors unit inventory and use of supplies; communicates problems to The Nursing Manager and Materials Management Department (Inventory Specialist in E.D.)
Reports maintenance repair requests and monitors for completion.
Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff
Participates in unit-based performance improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives
Assists Nurse Manager by contacting staff about education and initiatives (mandatory education, staffing needs, and other issues, etc.) (Does not apply in E.D.)
Greet patients and family on arrival to L&D
Answer telephone within the nurses station and convey messages
Maintaining complete, accurate medical records on L&D patients
Prepare charts for patients being admitted
Order entry/data retrieval
Assist physician offices with booking of C-sections, inductions, and non-stress tests.
File prenatal charts
Log and prepare fetal monitor strips for archiving
Registration
Register all labor assessments and patients for admission to labor and delivery
Interview patient to ensure the accurate collection of information required for demographic and financial purposes are entered into the hospital’s computer database
Follows St. John’s Riverside Hospital attendance policy
Regular attendance and timeliness are required in your job. This includes the following: (1) being at your work station ready for work by the start of your shift (2) taking only the time allowed for breaks (3) remaining at work during your entire shift, unless excused by a supervisor (4) leaving promptly at the end of your shift, unless you have been given advance permission from your supervisor to work past that point; and (5) calling in and personally notifying your supervisor or another member of management if you are going to be either absent or tardy, unless a verifiable emergency makes it impossible for you to do so
Assume responsibilities as assigned by RNs, Nursing Managers and Directors
Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves as needed during working hours
Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that enable adequate sensory function to meet job requirements
Must understand and use Medical Terminology and be proficient in computer skills. Receptionist skills preferred Meditech knowledge preferred
Qualifications:High School Diploma or equivalent; Associates Degree Preferred. Insurance verification experience required. Must possess excellent customer service, and telephone skills. 2 years medical insurance verification experience within a medical setting ( doctor’s office, hospital). Meditech knowledge or similar SMS. Strong medical terminology proficiency and outstanding computer skills.
