About the Job
The Release of Information Specialist safeguards and protects patient’s right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to patient information. Work requires independent clinical and legal/regulatory decision-making alongside the advanced technical skill to manipulate the many systems to collect, compile and release information in the most appropriate secured method possible.
Responsibilities:- Assists patients with accessing their protected health information (PHI) by copying, printing or providing assistance with the patient portal. Assumes role of patient advocate when assisting patients with health information issues.
- Answers telephone and maintains a thorough knowledge of release of information policies and procedures when releasing information to requestors.
- Coordinates the electronic transfer of PHI to insurance companies through designated secure portals as needed to assure payment.
- Judges the legitimacy of each request and determines whether or not information can be released. Checks for properly executed authorization to release medical information.
- In following the HIPAA minimum necessary rule, releases information from the medical record utilizing discretion on what reports are pertinent to the request.
- Maintains proficiency with the legal record systems - Meditech, Sunrise Record Manager and Sunrise Clinical Manager EMR to expedite all requests for PHI.
- Accurately enters all requests into the Release of Information station to account for all PHI disclosures.
- Releases psychiatric and other “super confidential” information in accordance with state statutes and the HIPAA privacy rule regarding sensitive information.
- Process all requests for PHI from such sources as physicians, patients, attorneys, subpoenas, court orders, insurance companies, state and federal agencies, and other health care facilities.
Education / Training
- High School Diploma/Equivalent
Preferences:
Graduate of a health information technology program
Experience Requirements
- 1-year Medical record department or medical office experience

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
