Summary:
The Skeletal and Stem Cell Biology Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedics at Rhode Island Hospital is seeking a highly motivated organized Lab Manager/Research Assistant. The primary focus of the lab is on skeletal cell differentiation and development with specific emphasis on how protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and phosphatase (PTP) signaling impacts skeletal development and tissue homeostasis and how to target the PTK or PTP signaling pathways for skeletal tissue anti-degeneration and regeneration.

Responsibilities:
- Manage mouse colony including breeding post-op care administration of experimental treatments tissue sampling (e.g. ear punch) genotype confirmation via PCR euthanasia and tissue harvest. (Estimated: 5 hrs/wk)
- Draft and submit Animal Care and Use Protocols (ACUPs) for review by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Draft and submit applications for use of biological and/or chemical hazards to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). (Estimated: 20 hrs/yr)
- Work efficiently and collaboratively with PI and other lab members to execute scientific experiments including tissue harvest and cell isolation flow cytometry cell culture genetic sequencing RNAScope and imaging. (Estimated: 25 hrs/wk)
- Help manage and maintain the lab by assisting with the ordering and receiving of lab reagents/supplies; assist with the organization of lab supplies; make buffers for lab use ensure the laboratory safety is aligned with internal and external regulations. (Estimated 5 hrs/wk)
- In coordination with PI assist with on-boarding and training of new students and personnel including mouse handling and basic laboratory techniques including tissue dissections cell isolations cell culture PCR and protein analysis. (Estimated 5 hrs/wk)
- Assist with data collation and summary statistical analysis; the preparation of abstracts and presentations for scientific meetings; and the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Inclusion as author where appropriate.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Education Experience and Essential Skills
- Bachelor�s (at minimum) or master�s degree (ideally) in biological sciences with coursework in general biology cell biology immunology molecular biology and genetics.
- 16 Months (ideally) of full time hands-on experience working in a biology research laboratory that uses mice as model organisms for study.
- Experience conducting research involving genetically modified mouse strains (especially Cre-lox tissue-specific knockouts CRISPR/Cas9 etc.)
- Ability to plan coordinate and independently perform routine biological assays (e.g. cell isolation cell culture genetic sequencing microscopic imaging).
- Ability to work as a part of a collaborative research team and flexibility to adapt to the evolving short- and long-term research goals of the lab.
- Good oral and written English communication skills.
- Effective time-management skills.
Desired Experience
- Experience in skeletal biology immunology molecular biology and genetics or other directly related scientific field.
