POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Pathology Operations, BARC and BARC Quality managers, the biospecimen Research Associate will assist in screening, consenting, procurement, and data entry. As part of the BARC team, they will assist in fulfillment of order requests and work with BMC staff officers and attendings and procure consented samples as per established BARC protocols. The position will also focus on improving the pre-analytic process for specimen procurement, management and preservation for both the clinical service and the biospecimen archive.

Bachelor's degree or higher in relevant science (i.e. biology, etc.) along with the required number of course credits specified by CLIA.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Assists in the day to day operation of Biospecimen Archive Research Core (BARC) which may include screening, consenting.
- Understand and contribute to specimens accessioning and processing for the clinical service.
- Coordinate specimen collection and documentation including notification and communication with pathology, OR staff and research teams
- Develop or improve existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the governance of biospecimen collection with a focus on prostate, colon and breast tissue collection.
- Contribute to the Prostate Biospecimen archive by organizing and collating data and material
- Participate in specimen and slide imaging
- Assist in collection and reporting of NCI and other funded projects under the umbrella of the BARC
- Provide assistance and support to researchers with projects including coordinating potential sample collection.
- Generates data tables and statistics and reports on collections
- Assist in training and develop training booklets and/or manuals
- Contribute to lab meetings, agenda planning and prepares minutes for distribution
- Contribute to the creation and development of abstracts, manuscripts and potential presentations
- Assist in generation of figures and text for grants and/or contracts
- Attend project meetings on development of new collection or new research initiatives
- Contribute to the development of protocols and various research techniques to enhance collections
- Develops and maintains professional relationships with Pathology staff, OR staff, Pre-procedure etc.
- Practical laboratory work and/or development of new skills related to collection or processing of samples
- Understands the concepts of universal standard precautions, chemical hygiene, infection control and laboratory safety and cleanliness
- Collects information regarding potential quality improvement
- Adheres HIPPA, CAP and CLIA protocols regarding patient information
- Completes all required training including Human Subject Protection training and Safety
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures
- Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures
- Good team work and interpersonal skills
