Research Scientist, Structural Biology & Biophysics (Contract) 23095 - Vertex Pharmaceuticals

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated Scientist to support our fast-paced drug discovery efforts against soluble and integral membrane protein targets. The candidate will have a proven track record in protein biochemistry and working with difficult proteins/protein complexes. The candidate will join a team of biochemists, biophysicists, and structural biologists to determine the target mechanism of action and ligand engagement. Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills will be required.

The Scientist will focus on protein purification and growth and must be comfortable working with AKTA and ultracentrifuge.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Execute and optimize purification procedures for challenging proteins/protein complexes for Cryo-EM, crystallography, or biophysical techniques
• Perform biochemical/biophysical methods to QC protein samples ahead of downstream assays and structural work
• Participate in experimental design and independently conduct experiments
• Maintain accurate and timely records of experimental work by using ELN and be able to organize, report, and communicate results efficiently

Minimum qualifications

• PhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or relevant field with 0-2 years post-degree experience, or MS (or relevant degree) with 5+ years of relevant experience
• Track record of hands-on accomplishments in the purification of challenging proteins/protein complexes
• Previous use of manual and automated chromatography systems
• Use of biochemical techniques (e.g. Western blot, SDS-PAGE, etc.)
• Previous experience with structural biology, biophysical techniques, and/or protein expression is a plus

$53-$56/hr
