Research Scientist – Synthetic Chemist - Eqlipse Technologies LLC
Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH
About the Job
BlueHalo has an opportunity available for a full-time Research Scientist to join our collaborative and multidisciplinary team at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. AFRL consists of a team of chemists, materials scientists, chemical engineers, and physicists working on new technologies for advanced defense applications.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:The Research Scientist-Synthetic Chemist will be an active member of the Photonic, Electronic and Soft Materials Division working on pertinent synthetic research goals within the Polymers and Specialty Materials Branch. Primary responsibilities will be to leverage bio-based compounds through synthetic chemistry for the purpose of non-medical specialty applications. Emphasis in areas may include, but are not limited to, chiral compounds, cyclic hydrocarbons/heterocycles, amines and other heteroatom based organic and bio-based compounds.
Candidates should have strong synthesis skills as well as familiarity with multiple characterization techniques (GC-MS, UV/Vis, NMR, CD, chiral HPLC, CV). Furthermore, experience with electrochemical reactions, surface bound catalysts, enantioselective reactions, or small molecule purification is preferred. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the thought leadership of the research and will have the opportunity to expand their skillset through various experiences.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Performing synthetic reactions and purifications along with the characterization of organic compounds
- <10 gram scale synthesis using traditional synthetic organic chemistry such as air-free chemistry, anhydrous chemistry, and Schlenk line techniques
- Communicate methodologies effectively both written and verbal to a community of peers
- Optimization of reactions along with building a basic understanding of chemistry principles dictating reactivity
- This position will involve working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship.
- M.S. or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field of study required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to learn and develop new approaches and techniques
