Job Description Summary

The main focus of this position is to provide specialized technical support to the Penn Vet Comparative Pathology Core (CPC). As a research specialist, the employee is expected to contribute to the preclinical and clinical studies associated with a recently awarded P01 grant in collaboration with several investigators from the Radiobiology Program of the Abramson Cancer Center. In this role, the employee will be responsible for the collection and preparation of tissue samples from study animals for microscopic analysis including histopathological evaluation, molecular labeling (utilizing immunohistochemistry, multiplex immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization protocols on a Leica BOND RX platform), digital pathology, and whole slide image analysis (utilizing the Aperio VERSA and eSlide Manager system). The employee will also be integral in creating and maintaining quality control/quality assessment protocols and standard operating procedures for CPC activities. The employee is expected to be responsible for the day-to-day operations and act as the contact person for these activities, with oversight from the CPC directors.





Job Description


Job Responsibilities



+ Generate high quality tissue samples for a series of microscopic evaluations. This will mainly include the preparation of glass slide-mounted sections from paraffin embedded or frozen animal tissue.


+ Perform necropsy and/or organ dissection of study animals including tissue and blood collection, tissue fixation, trimming, and processing.


+ Execute protocols for tissue-based molecular techniques (immunohistochemistry, multiplex immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization).


+ Manage the digital pathology platform: perform whole slide scanning; and maintain the database; assist in advanced image analysis studies.


+ Update and maintain QA/QC protocols, SOPs, databases, and logbooks.


+ Communicate and coordinate with investigators transfer/delivery of samples and reagent and ensure proper submission of order requests using the CPC Request Manager System.


+ Communicate and coordinate with investigators: transfer/delivery of samples, request registration, database log entry, troubleshooting.


+ Ensure daily instrument maintenance, schedule maintenance repair, and maintain a clean, functional, and well-organized work area.


+ Monitor, maintain, and order reagents and supplies for the various activities performed.


+ Other duties and responsibilities as assigned





Required Qualifications





+ Research Specialist A: Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


+ Research Specialist B: Bachelor of Science and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


+ Bachelor’s degree in a life science-related discipline (or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training).


+ Experience with the application of histological/immunohistochemical techniques.


+ Basic computer skills.


+ Keen interest in the preclinical and translational research field.


+ Excellent organizational skills.


+ Effective communication skills.


+ Ability to work independently and handle several projects at any given time.





Preferred Qualifications



+ Proven laboratory experience with basic molecular techniques for gene and/or protein expression analysis (e.g. western blotting and qPCR).


+ Experience with digital pathology platforms.


+ Familiarity with the implementation of good laboratory practices (GLPs) and quality control programs.


+ Previous experience in working with laboratory animals.
