POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), performs experiments and other laboratory procedures in immunology, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, etc.,. Analyzes data using statistical analysis software and creates presentable graphs, tables, etc. of the data. Interacts with Principal Investigator and other laboratory staff to plan, carry out, and analyze experiments. Helps maintain equipment and reagent/material supplies as well as required institutional approvals for research.

Interacts with Principal Investigator and other laboratory staff to plan, carry out, and analyze experiments. Helps maintain equipment and reagent/material supplies as well as required institutional approvals for research.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews and implements the laboratory component of protocols pertaining to the study of viruses and bacteria. Prepares reagents, as directed. Collects and processes samples, using universal safety precautions. Works with the Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel to use bacteriologic, immunologic, and molecular techniques; sterile techniques with appropriate bio-safety precautions; and equipment.
- Conduct cell culture assays involving primary cells and established cell lines. Employs techniques, including immunofluorescence assays, ELISA, PCR/real time PCR, transfections, infections, and a variety of other research assays as required. Conduct procedures and assays as requested by the Principal Investigators. Performs experiments and laboratory procedures; performs testing, makes observations, and other analysis, as directed.
- Analyzes data and designs experiments with PI, Research Associates, and other laboratory personnel. Communicates results of procedures performed, and specific methods used, with PI, and other researchers.
- Documents and timely notifies Lab Manager or PI of any methodology problems and/or discrepancies encountered with instruments or equipment. Monitors equipment certification requirements and arranges for repairs as necessary. Maintains accuracy and integrity of data. Maintains computer databases of assay results and freezer storage logs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree, with major in a relevant scientific discipline (biology, chemistry, or related field).
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous experience in a laboratory setting preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of routine and complex laboratory techniques (e.g. pipeting, use of microbalance, serial dilutions, metric units, etc.), operation and care of laboratory equipment, and general housekeeping duties required in a lab.
- Knowledge of safe handling procedures for hazardous materials and contaminated specimens.
- Knowledge relating to virologic, immunologic, and molecular techniques.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers. Experience with statistical analysis tools a plus.
- Demonstrated collaborative, interpersonal, and communications skills.
- Requires good organizational skills and ability to interpret, read and write results of the studies conducted.
