Knowable Magazine, an award-winning online publication dedicated to exploring science research through a journalistic lens, has an immediate opening for a part-time, science-trained editorial researcher to meticulously confirm facts in each piece of content (articles, graphics, multimedia) and to perform original research/reporting on a specific topic. Fact checking will include names, numbers, details, broad statements, spelling, historical information, quoted results of studies and surveys, data, affiliations of sources, including directly ascertaining that the sources did say what is quoted in story or implied information attributed to them.
The individual in this role must be able to communicate diplomatically with colleagues, freelancers and sources to confirm information and suggest corrections or clarifications. The Researcher will also assist with the creation of the weekly newsletter, article summaries for social media and other editorial tasks as needed. The position should be able to work independently and as part of a remote team committed to accuracy, excellence, journalistic guidelines and public understanding of science.
The hours of work will vary from approximately 6 to 12 hours per week (some availability required Wednesday/Thursday) and we will consider this role as a remote position for an exceptional candidate who resides in CA, CO, GA, HI, IN, MA, MN, NC, NV, OH, OR, PA, NY, WA, WI
Qualified candidates need to have:
- Expertise in fact checking skills—independent research and reporting skills—to ensure an article's accuracy
- Excellent analytical skills to evaluate language used and when that language should be changed
- Ability to read and comprehend technical articles in an array of scholarly disciplines
- Strong judgment
- A professional demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with diplomacy and tact
- Math skills to ensure that any quoted numbers or equations are correct
- A strong work ethic
- Mastery of the internet and excellent search skills to find accurate and up-to-date information
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Exceptional attention to detail

Annual Reviews offers the following benefits for part-time employees in this role: accrued sick time, paid bereavement leave, and jury duty leave.
Pay Scale: Following is the salary range that Annual Reviews expects to pay for this position: Min: $32.00/hour - Max: $43.00/hour. Actual compensation will be determined by several factors including but not limited to: level of experience, skills, and specific geographic home office location.
