About the Job
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing Cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician orders, department policies and procedures. Performs specific tasks as designated by supervisor with the ability to complete these tasks independently. Accepts increased responsibility as directed by supervisor or department director. Disassembles, cleans, disinfects, and assembles all types of respiratory equipment. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served; also demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed. Performs, monitors, and evaluates basic and advanced procedures (non-invasive and invasive) as ordered by the physician pursuant to department policies for both emergency, acute and skilled care of all age patients including pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients and various diagnosis. Sets up and administers all routine and complex respiratory therapy procedures to patients of all ages in all areas of the hospital as prescribed by a physician. Maintain all department and hospital records and enters accurate information into the electronic health record. Demonstrates knowledge and sensitivity to cultural and religious beliefs of patients, visitors and staff. Therapists are expected to be self-directed in the absence of department leadership. Performs other duties as assigned. Performance Expectations: ï‚· Draw, run and result blood gases using the i-STAT accurately. ï‚· Independently utilize and trouble shoot routine technical issues found in equipment associated with routine Respiratory Care. ï‚· Move equipment and patients utilizing safety measures for both yourself and the patient. ï‚· Document clinical data and charge information in EPIC EMR independently. ï‚· Immediately advises department director of any quality or personnel issued identified within the department. Qualifications: Education/Skills Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Technology Program. Work Experience: Three to five years of Respiratory Therapy experience preferred but not required. Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE ï‚· Licensed with MS Department of Health (MSRT) ï‚· Registered by NBRC Additional Certification/Licensure - Obtained based on required timeframe below ï‚· Basic Life Support Within 30 Days of Employment Required ï‚· Advanced Cardiac Life Support Within 90 Days of Employment Required ï‚· Pediatric Advance Life Support Within 90 Days of Employment Required Mental Demands: Ability to translate knowledge of respiratory therapy equipment operation, application, and clinical application, contra-indication, adverse response, benefits of therapy, and of the procedures to care provision and troubleshooting. Compassion for the critically ill or special demand patient. Able to exercise professional judgment in an accurate manner with the realization that error may have serious consequence to patients. Show initiative, dependability, and "sincere interest" in being a capable, cooperative, and understanding health care member. Attends continuing education programs to remain as clinically competent as possible. Ability to read, write and interpret data.
