Position Overview:
The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) provides specialized respiratory therapy services within a correctional facility, working in collaboration with the healthcare team to assess, treat, and manage patients with respiratory disorders. The RCP ensures that all respiratory care protocols align with correctional healthcare standards and meet the unique needs of the inmate population.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess Respiratory Conditions: Conduct comprehensive respiratory assessments for patients with chronic or acute conditions such as COPD, asthma, emphysema, and respiratory infections.
Administer Treatments: Provide respiratory treatments including nebulization therapy, oxygen administration, and chest physiotherapy according to physician orders.
Monitor and Evaluate Patients: Regularly monitor patients’ respiratory status, including vital signs and oxygen saturation levels, and adjust treatments as necessary.
Mechanical Ventilation Management: Assist in the initiation, maintenance, and weaning of patients on mechanical ventilators.
Patient Education: Educate patients on respiratory health, including inhaler techniques, smoking cessation, and managing chronic respiratory diseases.
Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for patients, providing input on care plans and suggesting necessary interventions.
Emergency Response: Assist in responding to medical emergencies within the facility, such as respiratory failure, by providing immediate care including intubation and CPR support.
Maintain Equipment: Ensure all respiratory therapy equipment, such as ventilators and oxygen concentrators, is properly maintained and functioning.
Documentation: Accurately document all patient interactions, assessments, and treatments in the facility’s electronic health record (EHR) system.
Adherence to Facility Protocols: Follow all correctional facility protocols related to safety, security, and confidentiality while providing care to the inmate population.
Qualifications:
Licensure: Valid and active Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in California.
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a clinical or correctional healthcare setting is preferred but not required.
Skills: Strong interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and time management skills.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move equipment, as well as assist patients in need of physical support.
Working Conditions:
Environment: Working within a correctional facility requires adherence to strict security guidelines and the ability to interact professionally with the inmate population.
Hours: May involve shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the facility’s needs.
Safety: RCPs must be vigilant in maintaining a safe environment, following all infection control procedures and ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
