The Education Respiratory Specialist role is grounded in evidence based practice and enhancing competence and role performance of respiratory therapists for both inpatient and pulmonary lab, which contributes to the provision of safe, quality patient care. The practice of the Education Respiratory Specialist focuses on inservices, continuing education, career development and role transition, research, evidence based practice and scholarship, academic partnerships and orientation and competency programs.

1. Analyze and evaluate educational needs of all levels of respiratory care staff to design priority organizational programming to develop and maintain competencies.
2. Maintains a high level of clinical expertise in the area of Respiratory Care and Acts as a clinical consultant to nursing, and medical staff
3. Integrates current national practice, research and evidence, regulatory and education standards into all programs to assure adherence to quality measures.
4. Designs, consults and implements curriculum and instructional systems at the organizational level which develop competent, age-appropriate, patient/family centered care for all levels of Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Lab staff including central orientation, in-services and continuing education programs.
5. Acts as a role model when facilitating, leading and teaching educational programs, both formal and informal, using a variety of educational methods.
6. Develop and implement evaluation systems to measure the effectiveness/outcomes of educational activities. Analyze data for use in decision making.
7. Mentors/consults with Patient Care Services and Ambulatory leadership and staff regarding the development of organizational, department or unit based educational processes and continuing education programming which contribute to quality patient outcomes.
8. Acts as a change agent to promote the enculturation of evidence based initiatives and clinical practices at an organizational level. Supports research activities and scholarship.
9. Synthesize, analyze, anticipate and forecast data and trends to identify patterns and variance upon which to formulate comprehensive educational programming which contribute to quality organizational outcomes.
10. Incorporate evidence from a variety of disciplines in the design of educational programs which support the enculturation of evidence based practice, research and critical thinking.
11. Construct programming which supports the philosophy, mission, vision, standards and policies of Nationwide Children's Hospital. Uses organizational strategic plans and goals to determine educational priorities.
12. Leads and participates on committees, task forces and projects.
13. Provides leadership in departmental and divisional interview process, peer review and quality improvement activities.
14. Develops and leads problem solving and conflict resolution strategies related to educational issues and team building on an organizational level. Advocates for programs that support the needs of the learner and organization.
15. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of educational principles, methods and technology.
16. Support lifelong learning by advising/mentoring respiratory therapists as they develop and execute a professional development career plan.
17. Demonstrate leadership on a professional level, maintaining appropriate competencies and involvement at community, state, national or international levels.
18. Provides educational consultation and linkages throughout the organization. Supports academic partnerships through consultation with respiratory schools.
19. Completes other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Registered Respiratory Therapist credentialed through the NBRC with licensure to practice in the State of Ohio by the Ohio Respiratory Care Board.
2. Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in health related field and already possessing an Associate's degree from and AMA-accredited Respiratory Care program.
3. Must possess and maintain current CPR card, and obtain and maintain PALS certification.
4. Competency in respiratory clinical practice and professional development.
5. Educational leadership skill in curriculum design and implementation at the organizational level.
6. Ability to adapt teaching methods for various types of learners.
7. Classroom teaching competency.
8. Group facilitation skills.
9. Experience in educational program development.
10. Leadership ability as demonstrated by high level of initiative, decision-making and organizational skills.
11. Neonatal / Pediatric Specialist (NPS), Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C) or Certified Pulmonary Function (CPFT) credential within 6 months of position acceptance. Must obtain NPS and AE-C. Strongly encouraged to have all three.
12. Experience with national educational, professional and/or accrediting organizations preferred (such as AARC and OSRC)
13. At least four (4) years experience in respiratory care practice including critical care

Must be able to see, hear, speak, read, and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation and care for oneself with little or no difficulty. Performance of principle duties and responsibilities may require the ability to travel.
