Revenue Integrity Analyst I- Charge CaptureThe charge capture analyst is responsible for the review and maintenance of the hospital and professional chargemasters, charge documents, and charge capture processes for accuracy and completeness. This role is responsible for facilitating proper charge capture, billing, and adjudication of claims in accordance with standard billing policies and reimbursement principles, clinical documentation practices, and CPT/HCPCS and ICD-9-CM coding (eventually ICD-10) through the use of the hospital’s electronic information systems and manual processes. This position supports the entire revenue cycle by using clinical expertise and analytical skills to resolve charging and billing issues identified by performing charge capture audits. The Chargemaster Coordinator is also responsible for training clinical partners on all aspects of maintaining charge accuracy.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Ensures accurate and timely charge capture methodologies are in place and executed for the assigned work unit—ensuring they are consistent (in terms of standardization) across pertinent areas/facilities as appropriate; reconciles charges against source documents to ensure that charges have been captured completely and accurately
• Identifies, researches, and analyzes billing errors and/or omissions, working with appropriate team members; ensures that charge date flows appropriately between departmental and organizational computer systems; may also address routine system interface issues
• Provides training to staff engaged in billing data entry and related charge-capture/reconciliation activities to ensure procedures are understood and charges are booked timely, appropriately, accurately, and completely, and are properly documented
• Recommends items for chargemaster inclusion based on clinical applications and coding guidelines; develops and maintains, in collaboration with Revenue Cycle, current charge capture methodologies and tools
• Performs annual and quarterly chargemaster updates and ensures those charges are documented
• Prepares reports and provides departmental summary information to the Revenue Cycle team which is responsible for ensuring that all charges on a system-wide basis are being captured, charged, and reimbursed appropriately and for overall compliance
• Assists interdepartmental teams in troubleshooting accounts that are being held in A/R due to charging/documentation discrepancies
• Facilitates communication with care providers regarding documentation opportunities and/or requirements. Advise and educate ancillary departments on proper charge and code assignments and the correct use of charges
• Performs related duties as required
Position Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor degree in Nursing, Finance, Health Administration, Public Health, Business Administration or a related discipline desired
• Completion of a recognized course of study for health information practitioners or coding specialists preferred
• Certification in CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, CPC, or specialty coding required - OR - If current RN, certification required within 6 months of hire.
Experience
• At least 3 years experience in hospital/professional charge capture review, medical record review, and claims auditing, and in working with regulatory and policy compliance issues related to federal and state programs
• Minimum 3 years coding experience required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Strong understanding of coding rules, regulations, and requirements as they relate to review of and required documentation
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel
• Ability to meet productivity standards and deadlines under duress
• Effective at adjusting to change, prioritizing duties, and handling stress
Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time. Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
