Supervises all unit activities in Emergency Services during assigned shift; acts for the Nurse Manager in his/her absence. Assures that quality patient care is delivered consistent with established policies, goals and objectives of the department and the hospital.
Responsibilities:- Responsible for the overall unit activities for assigned shift, observing personnel in the work situation, giving direction when needed and following up on observed deficiencies.
- Assists in conducting the employment process, to include participating in the interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating, disciplining and terminating of employees.
- Maintains time and attendance records on each day worked. Follows up on employees requiring disciplinary action.
- Exhibits and interprets the philosophy and objectives of the hospital and the Emergency Services Department.
- Demonstrates an awareness of the economics of maintaining and managing the activities of the department and interprets the budget to personnel and promotes optimal utilization of resources.
- Assumes responsibility for providing a safe, clean and orderly work environment, to include reporting malfunctioning equipment and maintenance needs and supply requests to the appropriate department and requiring appropriate implementation of safety precautions by personnel.
- Utilize critical thinking in performing technical and manual skills to meet patient care needs.
- Appropriate delegation, coordination and supervision of others in the delivery of patient care.
- Assumes accountability for appropriate utilization of resources.
- Collaborates with Nurse Manager to manage unit/shift personnel.
Education/Licensure/Certifications: Current Alabama RN license or a current RN multi-state license
Experience: Minimum of one-year experience as a staff nurse in an emergency department in which supervisor and administrative abilities have been demonstrated.
Additional Skills/Abilities: Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly. Must have knowledge of all equipment and materials required for procedures described in the Emergency Services Policy/Procedure Manual and Nursing Service Procedure Manual. BCLS, ACLS, PALS, TNNC, JCAHO, and department specific competencies must be maintained. TNCC is preferred. Must be able to become proficient in use of pre-hospital radio equipment and poisondex. BCLS must be obtained within the provisional period of employment. ACLS must be obtained within the first year of employment.
