Job Summary:
- Responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of the patient, using nursing processes collaboratively with other health care providers. Promotes and provides education for the patient, family, peers and community about illness and medications when appropriate.
- Maintains a courteous and professional manner.
- Use nursing processes throughout the patient's stay to meet physical and psychosocial needs and participate with the patient and family on ethical issues/concerns.
- Accurately assess a patient’s physical and emotional needs and provides appropriate interventions.
- Anticipates and acts to maintain a safe environment for the patient and others.
- Deals effectively with expressions of anger, hostility from others.
- Interviews and assesses patient and/or family to obtain required information; using professional judgment to determine a plan of patient care to meet patient needs.
- Observes symptoms and patient's physical and emotional reaction to procedure(s) or treatment. Reviews and updates plan of care daily using ongoing observation and assessment to determine priorities.
- Maintains a complete, concise record of hospital stay by: charting concisely and legibly, correctly using flow sheets, reflecting a plan of care and nursing process, and charting interventions that indicate the ability to set priorities.
- Documents patient assessments, history, treatment and response;and condition at time of discharge or transfer.
- Develops a comprehensive discharge plan and sets goals for discharge on an individual basis.
- Safely performs venipuncture and administers medication by all routes.
- Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently.
- In emergency situations, i.e. Code Blue, makes accurate assessments and decisions, ensuring intervention is prompt and appropriate.
- Identifies subtle changes and abnormal vital signs via frequent patient reassessment. Documents, reports and implement interventions.
- Demonstrates understanding of and adheres to Department’s and Hospital Infection Control policies.
- Ensures that physician orders are implemented promptly and accurately.
- Applies professional judgment in facilitating group consensus and decision-making
- Demonstrate flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume, staff and scheduling needs. Works collaboratively with co-workers to provide self-scheduling that reflects fairness and appropriate unit coverage.
- Exhibits dependability as evidenced by reliable attendance in accordance with hospital policy
- Attends department staff meetings and assigned committee forums. Participates in mandatory and recommended service training
- Follows all policy relative to maintenance of privacy, safety protocols, complaint resolution, respectful workplace, etc.
Educational Requirements and Certifications
• Graduate of an approved program of practical nursing.
• Current West Virginia State Nursing license is required.
• Must possess CPR certification.
• BLS Certification within the orientation period.
Experience
- One-year experience in an urgent care clinic, emergency dept., or medical office setting, is preferred.
- Phlebotomy experience required.
- Authorizations and referral experience is required.
- Patient scheduling knowledge is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of general theory and practice
- Experience using EHR and medical equipment used in ER
