Position Summary:
Under the general supervision and direction of and with the authority from the Chief Nursing Officer, the Registered Nurse Administrative Supervisors directs and supervises patient care throughout the assigned shift; assesses and arranges for the needs of the on-coming shift. Acts in the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer and may be required to act in the absence of the President and Chief Executive Officer if the nature of an emergency dictates. Maintains adherence of shift employees to policy and procedure as well as emergency procedures (Disaster Plan, Fire Drill, Bomb Threat and Medical Emergencies). The Administrative Supervisor may take action in any department of the hospital as required for the safety of the personnel and the patients. The Administrative Supervisor must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide and supervise the care based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric population on all nursing units. The Registered Nurse Administrative Supervisor performs all functions in an ethical and professional manner.
Essential Job Functions:
- The Administrative Supervisor delivers nursing care in compliance with nursing standards of care and practice. Is knowledgeable and proficient in emergency care as required in all nursing units.
- Makes decisions on a variety of unit, and department personnel needs, meeting patient care requirements and financial expectations.
- Integrates the department into the primary functions of the hospital by cooperating with other departments and services.
- Demonstrates administrative effectiveness by assuring adequate staffing for all shift personnel, advising and supporting unit staff nurses in prioritizing needs. Encourages open communication with staff members in order to gain participation in problem solving and planning.
- Demonstrates good judgment and decision making ability by basing decisions on long term as well as immediate needs, appropriately initiating emergency care and measure according to policy and procedure. Is aware of financial responsibility to monitor staffing efficiency.
- Demonstrates initiative and resourcefulness in the use of own time and delegation of work to complete assignments. Is alert to potential problems, evaluates, takes action if immediate need is identified, or makes recommendations for resolution to Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Administration.
- Demonstrates supervisory skill by appropriately directing staff activities, meeting with staff to resolve problems and assisting in the evaluation of employees, recommending promotion, special training, retention or termination.
- Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills, expresses ideas clearly and in a professional manner and encourages participation from other by active listening to ideas, comments and suggestions.
- Participates actively in the functions of the department by meeting and committee membership and attendance, and participating in task force groups or multidisciplinary CQI teams.
- May be required to perform other duties as requested by the Chief Nursing Officer.
Education: Currently registered in the State of Virginia, or eligible for licensure. Prefer Baccalaureate Degree.
Experience: Job requires five (5) years of previous nursing experience in an acute care setting and six (6) months of learning time on the job for a total of five and one half-years.
Special Qualifications: Must maintain BLS and ACLS certifications. Previous management course preferred.
