Immunization Program Nurse Essential Functions
1. Coordinates and participates in the operation of Immunization clinics by scheduling and
delegating activities to nurses, nurse technicians and clerical workers.

2. Maintains vaccine stock through temperature monitoring, inventory monitoring, vaccination
supplies, proper storage, and ordering vaccine.
3. Administers vaccines by assessing and evaluating the immunization status and needs of
clients and health department staff through knowledge of current vaccine guidelines,
vaccination schedules, state requirements, and client medical history. Makes specific
individual nursing judgment using immunization guidelines and the Center for Disease
Control and Prevention and the Pink book as resources.
4. Administers vaccines according to manufacture guidelines and administers using safe and
proper techniques to ensure accuracy. Educate parents and clients on vaccines, possible side
effects, timing of next appointment.
5. Interprets international immunization records for accurate assessment of immunization
assessment. Enters immunization status into State database, and provides documentation to
appropriate organizations.
6. Maintains up-to-date and accurate standing orders for administering vaccines. Obtains
Medical Director’s signature in a timely manner and implements the orders.
7. Monitors immunization reporting for county schools and childcares through Michigan
Childhood Immunization Registry (MCIR)/School Immunization Reporting System (SIRS).
Conduct yearly training for school and childcare personnel responsible for reporting and
coordinate with schools/childcares for any additional training needed (either in person or by
phone/email). Disseminates yearly information packets and letters regarding new
immunization reporting requirements to all school districts in county. Monitors schools and
childcares compliancy during designated reporting periods. Documents any conversations,
waivers, and compliancy levels for each site and maintain documentation for 3 years.
Coordinates with MDHHS Field Representative regarding any issues with MCIR/SIRS,
schools not complying with reporting, reporting training.
8. Provide immunization waiver education to parents requesting waiver for immunizations.
Documents waiver information in the State MCIR system.
Employment Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Experience: Two years of nursing experience with an emphasis on assessment and
communication skills
Other Requirements: Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in
the State of Michigan. Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
