- JOB SUMMARY
- Independently Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the individualized medical and nursing plans of care, physician orders and established policies and procedures. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the Tennessee Board of Nursing. Acts as a resource on assigned unit to advise and make decisions in nursing assessments and interventions. Oversees and guides team members under his or her supervision. Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients during the immediate pre-operative and intra-operative phases of their surgical care. Position may require call shifts with a response time of 30 minutes. Assists in operations under the supervision of surgeons and other surgical personnel. May help set up operating room, prepare and transport patients for surgery, adjust lights and equipment, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons, hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
- JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and/or experience: Current licensure to practice professional nursing in
Tennessee. Competent in BLS and / or other specialized life support requirements designated
by work area or completion upon hire. Healthcare experience required. Successful completion of annual surgical competency.Knowledge: Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, license practical nurse and nursing assistants. Knowledge of and appropriate application of nursing process. Knowledge of infection control procedures, safety precautions, techniques involved in administering routine medications and / or treatments to patients. Thorough knowledge of aseptic surgical technique and infection control practice. Knowledge of the information and techniques necessary to perform surgical specialty.
Skills: Patient Assessment, Individualized Care planning, Critical thinking skills, Excellent Customer service, Active listening. Computer skills to assess, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems. Require critical thinking/reasoning while intervening during critical and non-critical situations. Must have strong customer service skills. Requires ability to monitor/assess performance of self, other individuals to make improvements or take corrective actions. Uses logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and acts in manner to affect positive outcomes.
Abilities: Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others. Ability to demonstrate emotional maturity by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to independently seek out
resources and work collaboratively. Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families. Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the individualized nursing care plan. Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment and follow-up. Ability to use computer and learn new software programs. Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools. Ability to think critically and problem solve while remaining focused and organized in a stressful and fast paced environment. On-call required. Demonstrated skills in crisis management, decision-making, communication skills, and promotion inter-disciplinary cooperation. Must possess the ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
