POSITION SUMMARY
The roofer position is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining different roof systems, as instructed by foreman, using materials such as Built-up, Modified, TPO, PVC, Shingles, Tiles. Roofers are required to complete all work per safety guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Climbing ladders to heights of at least 20 feet and performing a variety of intense work activities at such heights.
- Repeated lifting asphalt, felt, adhesives, equipment, etc; bending and stopping, and carrying roofing materials in excess of 50 pounds.
- Participation and compliance with safety program.
- Inspect problem roofs to determine the best repair procedures.
- Remove snow, water, or debris from roofs prior to applying roofing materials.
- Set up scaffolding to provide safe access to roofs.
- Estimate materials and labor required to complete roofing jobs.
- Cement or nail flashing strips of metal or shingle over joints to make them watertight.
- Install partially overlapping layers of material over roof insulation surfaces, using chalk lines, gauges on shingling hatchets, or lines on shingles.
- Cut felt, shingles, or strips of flashing to fit angles formed by walls, vents, or intersecting roof surfaces.
- Apply plastic coatings, membranes, fiberglass, or felt over sloped roofs before applying shingles.
- Install, repair, or replace built-up roofing, modified, and single-ply roofing systems, using waterproof sheet materials such as modified plastics, elastomeric, or other asphaltic compositions; sheet Metal Roofers will work with install, repair, or replacement of corrugated and standing seam metal roofing systems, gutters, downspouts, siding, soffits.
- Attach roofing paper to roofs in overlapping strips to form bases for other materials.
- Cover roofs or exterior walls of structures with slate, asphalt, aluminum, wood, gravel, gypsum, or related materials, using brushes, knives, punches, hammers, or other tools.
- Waterproof or damp-proof walls, roofs, by painting or spraying surfaces with waterproof coatings or by attaching waterproofing membranes to surfaces.
- Apply reflective roof coatings, such as special paints or single-ply roofing sheets, to existing roofs to reduce solar heat absorption.
- Apply alternate layers of hot asphalt or tar and roofing paper to roofs.
- Install vapor barriers or layers of insulation on flat roofs.
- Cover exposed nailheads with roofing cement or caulking to prevent water leakage or rust.
- Smooth rough spots to prepare surfaces for waterproofing, using hammers, chisels, or rubbing bricks.
- Glaze top layers to make a smooth finish or embed gravel in the bitumen for rough surfaces.
- Mop or pour hot asphalt or tar onto roof bases.
- Install attic ventilation systems, such as turbine vents, gable or ridge vents, or conventional or solar-powered exhaust fans.
- Install skylights on roofs to increase natural light inside structures or to reduce energy costs.
- Apply gravel or pebbles over top layers of roofs, using rakes or stiff-bristled brooms.
- Spray roofs, sidings, or walls to bind, seal, insulate, or soundproof sections of structures, using spray guns, air compressors, or heaters.
- Punch holes in slate, tile, terra cotta, or wooden shingles, using punches and hammers.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business need
- The ability to comprehend and follow simple oral instructions
- Knowledge of common tools and materials used in construction and maintenance work is highly desired
- The ability to perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance and repair tasks; mechanical aptitude; ability to perform task outdoors in a variety of climatic conditions
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Prior experience in commercial/residential roofing is desired
- Experience using various hand tools and equipment, such as scaffolds, taking safety rules into consideration

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of the job. Requires full range of hand movements in the performance of the assigned duties, including the utilization of hand and power tools common to maintenance and repair activities. Must be able to regularly lift 50 pounds and up to 80 pounds. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods and ability to work at heights for long hours
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT USED: Motorized vehicles and equipment which may include chemicals, mechanical hand tools, electrical power tools, and materials handling equipment. Occasionally operates motor vehicles including pick-up trucks, dump trucks, forklift; motorized roof top equipment; and kettle. Ability to operate or utilize all general construction equipment including air compressors, nails guns, hammers or hatchets, scaffolding, hand tools, wheelbarrows etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. Frequent working around moving mobile equipment. Occasional exposure to materials and chemicals that could cause personal injury if improperly handled.
BENEFITS:
Salary is dependent on experience and ranges from $20.00-$34.00/Hour. After 60day wait period, eligible for health insurance base plan that is 50% employer paid; 50% employer paid dental; option to purchase employee paid vision;$25,000 life insurance policy that is employer paid; GAP coverage by employer if employee has MM coverage; option to purchase employee paid accident coverage and critical illness; 401k; paid vacation; paid sick and safe leave; after two years of continuous full-time employment, all hourly roofing and sheet metal employees will receive 3 paid holidays per year: Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Christmas; discretionary annual bonus.
