KSD Unified Sports Advisor
Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. The Unified Sports Advisor reflects a world of acceptance and respect by providing Special Olympics athletes and partners with instruction, guidance, support, and encouragement to achieve new goals. They teach sports fundamentals, techniques, and strategy, but they also reinforce sportsmanship, teamwork, team spirit, self-confidence.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the administration of the high school’s Unified Basketball and Soccer Teams which is composed of a proportional number of students with intellectual disabilities and students without.
- Liaison regularly with the school’s athletic director, the Unified Sports Coordinators, and Special Olympics WA to ensure quality program standards are being met, and policies and rules are being followed.
- Develop and implement practice plans in which sport instruction is provided to all participants.
- Organize and lead all practice sessions and recruit volunteer assistant coaches if needed. There needs to be a minimum of two practices each week.
- Impart the philosophy of a positive inclusive sports experience by following the principles of Unified Sports.
- Plan and manage competition strategies for individuals and the team at Unified Basketball and Soccer competitions.
- Recruit students with intellectual disabilities, students with other types of disabilities, and students without disabilities for the team.
- Handle all paperwork requirements and forms required by the KSD and Special Olympics Washington in a timely fashion.
- Attend a Unified Sports® Sport Coaches’ Training.
Persons applying for paid coaching positions must meet district and WIAA requirements including a valid background check. Applicants for head coaching positions must be at least 21 years of age. Applicants for assistant coaching positions must be at least 19 years of age. They must also have a valid first aid and CPR card. The following procedures must be followed in order to apply for paid coaching positions:
- Complete the KSD classified online application process including professional reference forms.
- Annually complete the WIAA general rules clinic and the WIAA approved rule clinic for the sport being coached prior to the end of the third week of the sports season.
- Have successfully completed Concussion recognition and management with Return to Play Protocols training as required by Washington State Law that must be renewed every three (3) years.
- Have successfully completed Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness and Training as required by Washington State Law that must be renewed every three (3) years.
- Before the beginning of the third year of coaching, a member school coach (paid or volunteer) must complete a school district approved Coaching Principles training, or complete the NFHS Coaches Fundamentals Course, or attend all sessions of the WIAA Coaches School, or other Coaches School as approved by the WIAA or the local school district. After initial completion, coaches will be required to repeat this training every three (3) years
- Building athletic directors will monitor the applicant pool for their open positions and contact applicants as necessary.
- If hired, the paid coach must complete the hiring paperwork and KSD trainings.
