Safety and Environmental Health Specialist - University of Maryland Medical System

I. General Summary

Under limited supervision coordinates safety and environmental health research, planning, support and training activities for UMMC on the Downtown and Midtown Campuses including hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and other associated facilities. Provides operational support and leadership to hospital leadership on EHS related topics. Develops and grows internal (and external) agency relationships to support the UMMC safety and environmental health program. Creates and maintains a safe and healthful environment for patients, employees, and visitors in owned and leased facilities operated by University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)..

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Active participant in the development of the strategic vision for EHS for UMMC facilities.

2. Works with stakeholders to develop and implement EHS policies, procedure, and standards .

3. In collaboration with the Director of Safety, manage the UMMC Joint Commission and Center for Medicare and Medicaid preparation activities for the Environment of Care – Safety and Hazardous Materials management programs.

4. Conducts safety surveys and risk assessment activities to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and control potentially hazardous factors and risks associated with UMMC operations and the physical plant. Identifies and assesses environmental effects that may be caused by operations with the aim of protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment; conserving natural resources; and reducing pollutants, resource consumption, waste volume, and toxicity.

5. Reviews and approves design documents and construction and renovation activities for compliance with applicable safety and environmental health policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

III. Education and Experience

1. A baccalaureate degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Health, related engineering field or equivalent is required. Demonstrated equivalent knowledge gained though work experience, training, certification and competency may be substituted.

2. A minimum of 5 years professional experience as an industrial hygienist, safety inspector, environmental engineer, or occupational safety specialist, or similar responsibilities preferably in a hospital, health care or bio medical research environment.

3. Experience in health care .is required

3. Detailed oriented and a strong team player. Flexible and able to adapt to rapidly changing situations.

4. Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to work successfully with a diverse group of staff at all levels within the organization and external partners to coordinate, maintain and lead hospital wide safety initiatives. .

5. Current knowledge of Maryland State Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Fire Protection Agency, and other related State and Federal regulations. Current knowledge of TJC Environment of Care requirements which are needed to ensure compliance and continued accreditation.

6. Able to negotiate, persuade or otherwise influence others to help ensure hospital wide compliance with safety policies, or issues which may be highly sensitive or controversial.

IV. Working Conditions

1. Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime may be required. Must maintain pager/cell phone access to the medical center.

2. As an emergency responder, work assignments may be stressful and unpredictable.

3. Work is primarily performed in a normal, office environment but may require work outside or in austere or harsh conditions
