The Role
Colossal Media is looking for a detail-oriented Safety Specialist with excellent communication skills to lead the implementation & enforcement of our health, safety, and environmental programs in NYC. This role focuses on minimizing work-related accidents and injuries by ensuring compliance with safety regulations, optimizing job sites and shops, and maintaining a safe work environment. The Safety Specialist will collaborate closely with key stakeholders including the Operations Director, Sr. Director of Production, VP of Real Estate, Production Team, Painters, and senior management.

Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Program and Risk Strategy Management:
- Implement and oversee the comprehensive safety program and risk strategy.
- Ensure engagement and consultation with relevant internal and external parties.
- Safety Training:
- Deliver established monthly safety meetings and cover the safety manual.
- Conduct monthly safety meetings focused on safety standards.
- Ensure completion of personnel training and follow-up on corrective actions.
- Onsite Safety:
- Collaborate with the Sr. Director of Production, Real Estate, Sales, and Operations for wall onboarding and maintenance for sales and production starts.
- Create and implement Hazard Assessments for each location.
- Review onsite safety for each job and recommend improvements.
- Serve as the main contact for all safety issues and accident claims, with full ownership of any claims.
- Conduct job post-mortem reviews to identify safety issues and develop action plans.
- Monitor and stay current on regulations and requirements related to hazardous materials and agents.
- Respond to and assist in all emergencies.
- Assist with regulatory bodies (OSHA, DOT, EPA, State/Local Regulators).
- Assist facilities management with regulatory permits, report submissions, and compliance with site permit conditions (e.g., recordkeeping, PSM, storm water, special waste).

Safety Strategy:

Lead the Colossal-wide system for hazard identification, evaluation, and implementation of effective controls.

Identify hazardous operations and activities, and implement measures to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health issues.

Collaborate with Operations, Paint, and Leadership Teams to enhance process efficiencies.

Stay informed on safety requirements and ensure policy alignment with OSHA and other regulatory bodies.

Attend job start-up meetings and provide strategic input on safety plans.

Promote a culture prioritizing safety and advocate for a zero-incident SHE culture throughout Colossal.

Achieve annual targets for reducing incident frequency, severity, and costs.

Collaborate closely with Lamar’s Area Field Manager and VP of Safety/Risk Management.

Employee Management:
-
Work with Operations and Resource Manager to ensure production and shop crews have necessary certifications and renewals for job sites (e.g., OSHA 10, suspended scaffold certifications, COFs from Colossal, and DOB-issued Foreman Card).

Ensure attendance at monthly safety meetings.

Conduct safety workshops for new staff and temp workers, and obtain attendance signatures.

Monitor communication channels for red flags and work with management on real-time communication and disciplinary actions.

Conduct regular Job Site Audits.

Manage the incident reporting and investigation process.

Supervise tasks and duties assigned to Operation Managers and Coordinators.

Conduct monthly observations, and inspections, as required by the Main Location Safety Audit.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:
- Ability to work in a team and independently, with little supervision.
- Read and understand Safety Data Sheets.
- Good communication skills - ability to speak and read English fluently.
- Must be willing to work and get along well with others.
- Basic computer skills including Internet navigation, Word, Excel, Slack, Notion, Google apps, and other required platforms.
- Ability to comply with Colossal Media’s safety standards while performing work.
- General knowledge of Lamar Advertising policies, Colossal Media, Department of Transportation (DOT), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety regulations.
- Ability to climb heights and to comfortably and safely work at heights above ground level.
- Ability to document installations, through photographs and written logs.
- Skilled in the practical applications of mathematics, in relation to construction and operation tasks.
- Skilled in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
- Ability to autonomously run meetings with confidence and clarity
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills
Education and Experience Requirements:
Required:
• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• A degree in SHE or equivalent, or 5 years experience working in construction safety or risk
management.
• A valid driver’s license.
• 5+ years of relevant work experience.
• 3+ years in the field either outdoors at job sites or within a production facility in NYC.
• Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction course
• OSHA 40
• Site Safety Card
• Current 500 and 510 courses with the ability to teach OSHA 10 and 30-hour classes.
Preferred:
- Previous experience working at heights above ground level.
- Experience building timelines and logistics for multiple phases and teams.
- DOB safety requirements.
- CPR certifications.
- CDL license.
- Current First Aid CPR Trainer through the American Heart Association.

- The primary work environment will be a mix of indoor and outdoor at the shop location in Brooklyn, NY, and in the field at various job sites
