Position Overview
P.J. Keating is a leading supplier of quality crushed stone and hot mix asphalt throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We also provide heavy and highway construction and paving services for state and local road, bridge and highway projects.
We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager for our Massachusetts and Rhode Island locations. This individual is responsible for supporting and giving guidance of the overall safety philosophy of P.J Keating. This position requires an individual who is extremely motivated with a high level of organizational skill, including written and verbal communication, and problem solving. You will establish key internal relationships to help ensure safety continues to be embedded in the culture of our Company.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Applicant must be a team player willing to help find solutions, detail oriented, able to read and interpret material specifications, able to work in a physical and fast-paced manufacturing / construction environment and comply with all P.J Keating safety requirements.
The individual in this position will be responsible for the overall performance of department personnel, safety, and overall quality control.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Job Duties:
- Coach, mentor and develop staff including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities
- Oversight of personnel scheduling
- Interface directly with company leadership to address safety concerns
- Assist in maintaining a high level of safety compliance and awareness at company fixed locations (asphalt plants, offices, shops, and quarry locations) and road construction projects through site visits and documentation of deficiencies
- Interface with field crews on a regular basis to promote company safety philosophies, expectations, and personal responsibility.
- Interact and consult with other members of the CRH safety team to develop new safety initiatives, objectives, and best practices
- Attend training sessions/meetings presented by CRH or national safety organizations as needed
- Training
- Appropriate MSHA or OSHA required training
- CRH mandated training as needed
- Effectively manage any work-related injury, incident, or near miss including:
- Incident investigation to determine cause and contributing factors
- Injury prevention strategies
- Reporting
- Implementation of corrective actions
- Interface with Worker’s Compensation TPA to manage cases.
- Recordkeeping (OSHA/MSHA) Maintain documentation for safety and health program (OSHA 300, monthly reporting, BLS annual surveys)
- Assist in environmental compliance as needed
- Consult with Human Resource personnel on safety concerns including:
- Orientation of new hires
- Toolbox meetings
- Monthly safety updates
- Safety incentive plans
- Annual safety meetings
- Disciplinary issues related to safety
- Return to Work
- Support and guidance of the overall safety philosophy of CRH and locate work may be required.
- Interface with CRH safety consultants on job site visits, fixed plant visits, and performance audits
- Initiative to perform/assist with other positions for job completion.
- This position requires an individual who is extremely motivated with a high level of organizational skill, including written and verbal communication, and problem solving.
- Must have great interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Must be available and willing to work weekends and holidays as necessary to meet the business needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience
- Previous experience in mining, road construction, asphalt paving and manufacturing preferred.
- BA/BS degree in Occupational Safety or related field or comparable professional experience in industrial safety preferred.
- Must be familiar with OSHA/MSHA/DOT regulations pertaining to safety and health.
- Computer skills in Microsoft office, Excel, Work and Power Point
- Must have a clear DMV record.
- Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative style.
- Ability and willingness to give and receive honest, balanced feedback.
- Ability to act in a professional manner with customers and represent P.J Keating in a character that inspires trust.
- Pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- Pass a pre-employment “Fit for Work” physical.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and construction areas as outlined by OSHA, MSHA, and state agencies. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position: Hardhat, safety glasses, face shield, reinforced toed shoes, hand protection, respirator, air monitor, reflective safety vest, and hearing protection.
