Main Purpose of the Position
Defines, proposes and ensures compliance with accident prevention policies, standards and regulations. Within its scope, ensures that these policies are deployed and implemented.
Scope of the Position (key dimensions)
The position covers all aspects of employee safety and worker’s compensation at the Plant by:
- Working with employees, contractors, Federal and State agencies and Plant management to assure a safe work environment.
- Coordinating the relationship between plant management and the plant’s property loss insurance carrier for the benefit of the plant.
- Using computer skills to design and write programs for safety functions.
- Using communication skills to explain, train and educate all levels of the organization.
Major Challenges Faced/Point of Complexity
The major challenge of the position is staying up to date on changes made in Federal, State, Local and Company regulations and requirements and initiating actions in the plant to maintain compliance with the regulations and requirements. Leadership skills are expected in order to efficiently ensure successful implementation of the above requirements.
Major Responsibilities/Outputs
Deployment of the safety policy
- Manage the Safety Management System (processes, procedures, methods, tools) necessary for the operation of the organization.
- Develop & deploy risk management programs for employees and contractors (including training).
- Implement technical measures to limit risks in the workplace.
- Define, deploy and manage safety improvement actions.
- Keep abreast of new regulations.
Evaluation of safety conditions
- Plan and monitor compliance with safety procedures in the field.
- Track corrective and preventive actions following field observation & events.
- Plan and arrange for regulatory compliance diagnostics.
- Carry out safety audits abased on internal or external references and follow up the resulting actions.
- Organize regular emergency drills.
Teamwork & coordination
- Manage safety team.
- Mobilize operations & maintenance teams in the deployment of safety programs & objectives.
- Support line managers in implementing safety improvements.
- Responsible for safety communication (internal and external) & quality of reporting.
- Develop the safety culture at all levels of its scope.
- Manage stakeholders (Group, BU, OSHAS, Unions, External Companies).
Knowledge and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial hygiene or health and safety, with 5-10 years of experience in the field of safety.
- Health and safety labor law/Legal requirements.
- Safety management system (ISO 45001).
- Safety critical activities technical knowledge (work at height, lifting, electrical safety, etc.…).
- Safety tools (JSA, field interaction, Take 5, etc.…).
- Knowledge of safety management tools (i.e Cority, Enablon).
- Leadership skills.
- Ability to listen and convince.
- Ability to manage stress.
- Adaptability and flexibility.
- Assess the impact of changes and propose appropriate responses or solutions.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now and at any time in the future.
